Main data

The starting system of the air type is used to start up the engines on the ground and in the air, for cold cranking, false start up and to abort starting.

It comprises the system which starts rotation of the engine rotor (APU, CB-78 air starter), ignition system and -78 system of automatic starting sequence.

ype........ ..... air
Start up system components:
auxiliary power unit (APU)... 9 (or other type)
air starter...................... .... –78
system of automatic starting sequence.. ..... Ė78 (same for both engines)
ignition system..... .. ʖ222
spark plugs... .. ϖ263 2 pc.
Time required to reach idle power setting after start button was pressed ..   ..   not more than 1 min
Time required to reach takeoff power setting after start button was pressed..   .   not more than 3 min
Maximum PTIT spike during start up (tg)... ..... within the OAT range (tOAT) 60 to + 60 should not be over the limits calculated according graph 1.4.
Engine start up is stable below 4000 meter altitude within the temperature range:
for =0... .. 60 t +60
for =4000 m....... . 60 t +30

NOTE: If engine oil temperature is below40 engine start up is allowed only after it was preheated by hot air as described in operators manual.

–78 air starter starts turbo compressor rotors rotation using compressed air provided by APU. After APU start up and after main engine start button was pressed Ė78 system of automatic starting sequence activates –78 air starter and ignition system. This is indicated by START UP AIR PRES light illumination.

The automatic sequence may be disengaged: The engine start up may finish:

if TC RPM = 6065% fuel control disengages air starter;

- after 55 seconds Ė78 system of automatic starting sequence is disengaged by timer even if TC RPM are below 6065%;

- if TC RPM are >66% engine start up should be stopped by crewmembers (by closing shut off levers);

if –78 air starter is not disengaged automatically, APU should be shut down.
