Fire Drill Guidance

When carrying out a fire drill, the Master should select a location for a simulated fire and then ensure the following actions are properly carried out by the crew:

1. The officers take charge and understand the fire control procedures.

2. The officers can communicate effectively with the crew in a common language.

3. Thecrew members report to their proper-muster stations, know their duties, and
can prepare for their duties as indicated in the muster list.

4. The fire pumps can be started, using at least two jets of water from widely
spaced hydrants, to ensure that the systems are in proper working order.

5. The condition of the firemen's outfits and other personal rescue equipment is in
satisfactory condition, and assigned crew members can properly don the
outfits/equipment.

6. The fire squads can properly carry out fire attack procedures at the simulated
fire location.

7. The crew properly uses the watertight doors, fire doors, fire dampers, and
ventilation procedures to isolate the fire effectively

8. The crew members assigned to CO2 rooms, the sprinkler system, and the
emergency pumps can explain their duties, and if possible, demonstrate their
familiarity with the equipment.

9. The crew members can communicate to the bridge or damage control center
using proper communications equipment, such as ship's phones or hand held
radios.

Abandon Ship Drill Guidance

When carrying out an abandon ship drill, the Master should ensure that the following actions are satisfactorily completed by the crew:

1. The crew members know what the abandon ship signal is in accordance with the
muster list.

2. The crew members report to their proper stations with any required equipment,
and they prepare for their duties as described in the muster list.

3. The crew members and any passengers have properly donned their lifejackets,
and all lifejackets are in satisfactory condition with whistles, operable lights, and
retro-reflective tape attached.

4. The crew members and any passengers are suitably dressed.

5. The officers take charge and understand procedures.

6. The officers can communicate effectively with the crew in a common language.

7. At least one lifeboat and any rescue boat are satisfactorily lowered, including operation of davits, brakes etc.; starting and operating lifeboat/rescue boat engine in both ahead and astern modes, and disengaging of lifeboat releasing gear.

8. The operation of any davits used for launching life rafts is satisfactorily carried out.

9. The crew members meet time requirements for launching survival craft: Two crew members can prepare survival craft for embarking and launching in less than 5 minutes
