1. Discuss the role of different types of context in discriminating the meanings of the emphasized words in word groups: 1) handsome woman, handsome man, handsome reward; make mistakes, make a chair, make sure; with a light heart, make light of smth, light relief, light drinker; tall building, tall man, tall order.

2. SEMINAR VI (PHRASEOLOGY)

1. Classify the following combinations of words into 2 groups comprising free word combinations and phraseological units: at death's door, at long last, beat about the bush, bite off more than one can chew, black suit, black sheep, by heart, dance around the room, draw a blank, draw the curtains, fall in love, fly high, going strong, open wide, pass through the door, pay through the nose, red tape, sтell a flower, smell a rat.

2. Explain the meanings of the following combinations of words as free word combinations and as phraseological units: to be on firm ground, best man, the bird is flown, black ball, blow one's own trumpet, break the ice, burn one's finger, first night, give smb the ring, keep one's head above water, look after, meet smb half-way, run out, show smb the door, throw down the glove, touch bottom.

3. Give Russian equivalents for the phraseological units listed above.

4. Listed below are words with a narrow range of combinability (group 1); find words they go with to produce free word combinations in the second list (group 2):

(1) aquiline (a), be thwarted in (v), catholic (a), shrug (v), tacky (a), tick (v), wistful (a), wolf (v);

(2) shoulders, profile, plans, paint, tastes, eyes, nose, food, aims, sympathies, mood, varnish, expression, watch, manner, ambitions, meter, interests.

5. Give Russian equivalents for word combinations listed above.

6. Classify the following units into words, word- equivalents and sentence equivalents: 1) dog-cheap, doggish, to dog, to go to the dogs; 2) follower, to follow, as follows, follow smth up; 3) fall on one's feet, on foot, footprint, footing; 4) that's a pretty kettle of fish, fish in troubled waters; 5) big game, the Olympic Games, give the game away; 6) lose heart, hearty, heart-to-heart, eat one's heart out; 7) East is East, West isWest and never the Twain shall meet, meet with an accident, meet the bill, meet one's Waterloo; 8) horse-power, power politics, the Great Powers, powerful.

7. Find Russian equivalents to the following proverbs: a fault confessed is half redressed; to measure another's corn by one's bushel; birds of a feather flock together; as you make your bedso you must lie in it; to count one's chickens before they are hat­ched; when the cat is away, the mice will play.

 

SEMINAR VII (ENGLISH VOCABULARY AS A SYSTEM)

1. Classify the following nouns into subgroups expressing the object, the action, the doer of the action, etc.: alteration, back, bureau, circus, cream, cut, day, division, dive, fortune, gipsy, giggling, hurry, jump, knocker, laughter, maker, mo­nument, person, process, run, satisfaction, shape, writer, table.

2. Classify the above nouns into concrete and abstract, countable and uncountable.

3. Group the following words according to their contextual asso­ciations: air, challenger, championship, classification, dig, garden, green, grow, juice, jump, language, luxuriant, match, meaning, outrun, overrun, participate, principles, race, sports, system, water, weed, word.
