Tape an A4 size sheet of paper to the wall – this will be the vertical white screen in the figure 1. Set up a laser-stand 1-2 metres away from the screen. Using a clamp stand, fix the laser so that it is at a small angle to the horizontal and the beam hits the ruler at the strip with 1/50 inch divisions (note, ); an interference pattern consisting of vertical lines should be observed on the screen. Measure the horizontal distance, , from the point where the laser beam hits the ruler to the screen.

Estimate and record the angle that laser beam makes with the horizontal on its incidence.Measure and record the values of x and Dx. Give a justification for the stated value of Dx.

Use the “shiny” part of the ruler as a mirror so that a single spot is observed on the screen due to a pure reflection. Mark the centre of the laser spot on the paper (point T). Slide the rule back into position so that the beam hits the 1/50 inch divisions and the interference pattern reappears. Mark the position of all diffraction spots on the paper. Repeat this procedure for the 1/64 and 1/100 inch divisions of the ruler. Remove the paper from the screen (don’t forget to attach that paper to the report). For all three data sets, measure values of corresponding to values of for up to about 10 bright points on the upper side of the central bright spot. Exclude values of greater than 0.4 times the distance because the approximation for will not be valid for these values.
