b) a research undertaken by all the students of the University in the area of their basic specialization;

c) a research activity of the final-year students in the area of this or that university discipline;

d) an investigation of the most urgent scientific questions and problems in one of the University subjects made by the final year students in order to prove their ability to work professionally in the sphere of their speciality;

e) the final written research paper before the graduation from the University;

f) a kind of graduation research work at the University to defend students’ professional skills and ability for investigation.

2. E Ask your group-mates about their diploma papers / graduation works (titles, research objectives, topicality, novelty and results).

1) What was the title of your diploma paper / your graduation work?

2) What was the sphere of your final-year research work?

3) What problems and questions was your graduation work devoted to?

4) What were the research objectives of your diploma paper?

5) Did you choose the theme of your graduation work from the list of different topics suggested at the faculty at random? or: Was it not an accidental choice?

6) Do you consider your graduation work to be topical and new?

7) Has it any theoretical or practical value or just has a summary (synopsis) character?

8) What were the scientific conclusions from your research? its results?

9) What mark have you got for your graduation work?

10) Under whose guidance did you write this diploma paper?

11) Was the defence of your diploma paper successful?

3. & ² Scan the stories about the students’ diploma papers. Mind the structure of their utterances.

A.:

I’d like to tell you some words about my graduation work. The title of this paper was “The presence of hard metals in foodstuffs”. In looking ahead and planning the work, I considered this theme to be rather serious. I investigated the problem of metals analysis and that of testing the presence of Pb, Cd, N and Zn elements in foodstuffs. My graduation work was completely devoted to the urgent questions of Analytical Chemistry and Medicine because these hard metals are very dangerous for people’s health.

The research objectives of my diploma were: to define the level of safety of foodstuffs and to find out the percentage of hard metals in them. I wrote my work under the guidance of Pr. V.U. Anikina at the final year of my studies at the University. Sometimes she gave me a word of advice about the literature to read for my diploma. Now I hope to continue my education in Analytical Chemistry and to take a post-graduate course.

B.:

The title of my graduation work was “My Granny’s portrait ”. I’ve made it at the final year of studies at the University. Frankly speaking, it was my first experience in Art research. I tried to reproduce the character and the spiritual world of my Granny. They say, I’ve made this portrait in my own individual manner. As for me, I have always been interested in the portrait painting, its history and development. Besides, being a student I was fond of Impressionism. The word Impressionism had been coined in 1874, after a hostile critic had looked at a picture entitled Impressionism: Sunrise, by Claude Monet. It brought about this “revolution of the color patch”. That was the reason to make my diploma work in this manner of painting. I’d like to give the spontaneous impression of my Granny, to reproduce her inner world by means of painting. It’s a pity, that the theme of my graduation work is not connected with the area of my future research. I made it under the leadership of Pr. Brynseva.

C.:

My diploma research was connected with artistic traditions in the Russian literary context of the 19th century. It was based on the heritage of Dostoevsky’s, Gogol’s and Chehov’s works. To tell the truth, it was my final student’s research work and my first experience of scientific investigation.

Generally speaking, it was really hard at the beginning, but I was really interested in this theme, so all the difficulties just stimulated my scientific curiosity. In the introduction and in the conclusion I particularly emphasised the immortal value of the classical literary heritage. The list of bibliography included nearly a hundred of different works. Finally, after the work was done I felt moral satisfaction. I dare say, the diploma research was very interesting for me and, besides, it took a certain period of my life. Naturally, I defended it successfully and got an excellent mark. I received many congratulations and good wishes from my group-mates, relatives and scientific supervisor. I think, this diploma research was not only the result of my student’s studies, but a landmark in the process of my growing up.

D.:

To start with, the topic of my graduation work was “Methods and technical problems of the electronic network installation ”. I wrote it at the final year of my studies at the University. It was my first serious step in researching the problem of network communication in the sphere of education. As for me, I am interested in the idea of network communication for educational purposes. I’d like to investigate it more closely. The research objectives of my graduation work were to analyse the possibilities of network communication between the schools of our town and the University. You know, the structure of the diploma research is rather ordinary. There are several main parts, an introduction and the conclusion. At the end of the work there is an appendix which contains some practical results.

My diploma work was devoted to the methodological support of electronic network applied to the teaching process. I tried to compare different points of view on the problem of network communication in the sphere of education. I analysed a lot of data about this theme. I wrote my work under the guidance of Pr. Melihov. The defence of it was successful, I’ve got an excellent mark for it.

E.:

I am a graduate from the Philological faculty of our University. So my graduation work was connected with the investigation of literature. The theme of it was “The semantics of personification expressions in Kuprin’s stories”. It was the 1st lesson of research work for me. This area of Kuprin’s literature was not investigated before, that's why they consider it to be rather new and topical. Frankly speaking, Kuprin's works were seldom investigated in literary criticism and Linguistics. May be that was the reason to feel myself a real researcher. I was interested in peculiarities of the individual author’s thinking process and in their linguistic expression. In the appendix to my graduation work I gave the list of personification expressions from the Kuprin’s stories. My scientific supervisor was pleased with the results of my work and, certainly, I’ve got an excellent mark for it.

F.:

My diploma research dealt with the theme of ‘Computer Modelling of Fluctuation Processes in Liquids and Gases”. It was my final-year work at the University. The fact is my present research theme is ‘Non-line Thermodynamics”. It is an applied branch of Physics. The sphere of my diploma investigation is closely related to my present research. Nowadays I am interested in the stability of the differential equations. I’d like to study this problem more closely especially to research some statements from Applied Mathematics. The thing is, my diploma research allowed me to use mathematical methods for understanding the physical picture of the world. The research objectives of my diploma were to make the mathematical model of physical processes, to prove its urgency, to apply this model to practice, to use it for the equations solution. I think, I’ve achieved all the above mentioned goals. I’ve got an excellent mark for my diploma research.

4. -Write down the topic about your graduation work / diploma paper and its defence. Use the key expressions from the Testing Yourself list and the questions from Ex.2. Consult the ” Combinatory Dictionary of Scientific Usage. A new Active Reference” by N.K.Ryabzeva, M.: “Nauka”, 2002 – to find appropriate expressions.
