Chronological review:

a) tell as much as you know about Celts (describe their culture, towns, family code, religion and speak about classes in their society (druids and horsemen);

b) practical work: ex.7 p.59(textbook) – find the names of places, rivers and hills of Celtic origin on the maps of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

 

c) speak about 1st Roman invasions and Latin influence on the English language (When did it happen? Which sorts of words were borrowed?)

d) practical work: checking home work: ex.5 p.58 (in the text find examples of Latin borrowings; identify the period of borrowings).

 

e) describe the period of Germanic tribes invasion (speak on their culture, customs, family traditions, bringing up children and time of their invasion to England);

f) practical work: ex.2 p.57 (subdivide all the following words of native origin into: a) Indo-European; b) Germanic; c) English proper;

 

g) speak on the period of Christianization (What country was Christianized first: Scotland, Wales, Ireland or England? Who was the person to spread Christianity in this country?);

h) practical work: ex.4 p.58 (identify the period of the following Latin borrowings; point out the structural and semantic peculiarities of the words from each period).

 

i) tell as much as you know about period of Scandinavian borrowings (date them, identify their major sphere of usage. How can you sort them out?);

j) practical work: 1. sort out Scandinavian borrowings from the following words:

word, plan, skein, story, skewer, time, fear, skiff, skillet, child, skilty, skim, skimmer, scribble, sculpture, skirl, skipper, season, skerry, skiver, skald.

2. ex.8 p.59 (in the sentences given in the exercise of the textbook find the

examples of Scandinavian borrowings).

 

k) answer the following questions: 1) When and under what circumstances did England become a bi-lingual country? What imprint features were left in English vocabulary by this period? 2) What are the characteristic features of words borrowed into English during the Renaissance? 3) What is meant by the native element of English vocabulary?

l) Control work: 1st variant – write as many suffixes of Latin origin as you remember; 2nd variant – write as many French suffixes as you know. Submit your papers to the teacher.

2) Read: p.62-71 of the textbook
