CACTUS (Community ACTion Ukrainian Style) is an international English language program aimed at promoting civic society development in the next generation of youth leaders in Ukraine. It is based in the city of Ternopil in western Ukraine and welcomes participants from all over the country. CACTUS is run by a team of Ukrainian and international youth and community leaders.

CACTUS is a cyclical program that takes place ever summer. Participants from all over Ukraine gather in Ternopil for a forum on community development and youth leadership. After the forum participants use their newly acquired skills and work on regional teams to implement their own projects in their local communities.

We believe that by fostering leadership and civic responsibility, as well as providing the skills to make a change, participants are empowered to carry out their own community initiatives. Through this network of active and engaged young Ukrainians, we can help create a generation of responsible leaders.

During the ten days at the CACTUS forum participants take two classes each day in project design and management, the first session is information based, while the second session of the day is applicative. Participants use the information from the first session and apply it to their unique community projects. Their community projects are designed in regional teams during the forum and are later implemented with the help of a staff mentor and funding through the CACTUS small grant program. The curriculum is also comprised of professional development classes and personal interest or elective classes; participants choose one course of their liking in each category. Courses offered for professional development are debate, public relations, world religions, world issues, and public speaking and for personal interest the classes offered include: healthy lifestyles, dance, Spanish and journalism. All participants also take part in “ Team Time”, which is focused on developing teamwork, leadership and cooperation skills.
