Ex. 8. Прочтите, переведите и перескажите текст об истории Омска.

Wonderful and extraordinary are the fates of Siberian cities. Small primitive settlements of the backward places of exile have changed into mighty industrial and cultural centres of the country.

Omsk and its history are examples of the extraordinary rapid development of Siberian cities when Russians were starting up to open up wide expanses of Siberia. The city was founded as a fortress on the left bank of the river Om’ in 1716 (during the reign of Peter the Great) when the group of Russian soldiers and Cossacks landed on the left bank of the river.

The founder of Omsk is considered to be lieutenant-colonel Ivan Buchgoltz. He had by right evaluated the strategic benefits of the future fortress at the junction of two rivers the Irtysh and the Om’. The first Omsk fortress was constructed on the steep left bank of Om’. It was pentagon shaped with paling and surrounding ditch. The first wooden fortress had for a long time been a base station for settlers and frontier fortification protecting the land from the nomads.

In the second half of the 17th century a new fortress on the right bank was erected which soon became the administrative centre of the Siberian borderland and renamed the town of Omsk. The fortress was surrounded by ditch and a rampart that had four gates, Tobolskie Gate remained and Tarskie Gate was restored 1991.

Omsk owes its becoming the commercial centre of the region to the Great Siberian Way. Omsk reached a summit in the period between 1860 and 1916. Those were the years when Omsk was finding the unique image that gives the city a look of an ancient Siberian capital up to now. While being a residence of the Governor-General, Omsk had a right to hoist the State Empire Flag.
