Preface

This book is aimed at those who have no musical education and want to learn to read music "at sight."

Thanks to Roman Stanskov, my friend and colleague. He helped me to work on this tutorial and also directed and edited the video course. Thanks to Alex Shkuropatsky (Lugansk - Kiev) who coined the society "Bagpipe lessons" at www.vk.com. Thanks to Anna Nasredinova. She is the first tester of this manual. Thanks to Alexander Krys (Stavropol) who gave me the idea for this book.

What you need to start practice

1. Time. One lesson a week, even if it is 10 hours in a row, will not do any good. Practice at least 3-4 times a week.

2. A metronome. I recommend INTELLI IMT-301.

3. A lectern, i. e. a music stand. The higher, the better.

4. A notebook. Be sure to keep a diary of your studies. In one column record your achievements, in another - your flaws.

Notes to exercises 1 - 10

1. In this exercise you use 3 notes: A, G, F. The notes are played with your left hand fingers. Duration ♪ (whole): each note lasts for 4 beats. Fingerings (ways of extracting notes) are listed on p. 4.

2. A new note, E, is added.

3. A new length is added – a half note or "half". It is pictured as ♪ or so ♪ and lasts for 2 hits.

4. In this exercise there is a new element: the league. The league can be of two types: the first type represents a smooth transition between different notes, for example, between A and G. This league is not needed for pipers. The second type of league unites two or several notes of the same height, for example, two F notes:

In this case, the notes sound in a massive block, without a gap between them, and the total length equals to the sum of the lengths of all the components.

5. A new note, D, is added.

6. A new note, С, is added. Now we use 4 notes played with the fingers of the right hand: F, E, D, С.

7. A most important element of playing bagpipes appears. This element is called in various ways: a Grace (a shortening for gracenote), an appoggiatura, a dent. It is used to separate notes of the same height from each other or as a decoration. In this exercise, use a short movement of the ring finger of the left hand or the index finger of your left hand.

8. In this exercise you use 5 notes: G, E, D, C. Pay attention to the "leaps" between the notes.

9. The A note returns. Now we play 6 notes. I again draw your attention to the "leaps" between the notes: watch for the synchronicity of your fingers.

10. The strangest exercise. The notes are scattered in a random order. All you need is accurate and automatic play of the notes and durations.
