There all sorts of different houses in Great Britain that you can live.

For example, terraced house is a house joined to a raw of other houses. It is not very big, only two bedrooms. There is one disadvantage. It is much nose if you have noisy neighbours.

Another house is semi-detached house. It is a house joined to another house. It is for two families. It has 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom with a toilet and a lounge. Also there is a small garden.

If you are rich you can have a detached house. It is a big house with 5 bedrooms, a kitchen and a lounge. There is a big nice back garden. This house is more expensive than a terraced or semi-detached house.

Also some people live in a block of flats. The flat is given for free by the local government to people who don’t have well-paid jobs or do not speak English. Most British people would not like to live in a block of flats because, first, it is badly build and, second, it is associated with poverty and crime.

If you like trevelling, you can buy a houseboat. It is a house that can float. England is just perfect for that because there are a lot of canals. People who have a house boat are independent; they don’t have a regular job.

I live in a block of flats. It is normal in Russia to live in such house. The majority of city people live in a block of flats.

9.Heroes

In my opinion, Hero is someone who cares for other people, who is ready to donate his own life for the life of others. And I think Campaigners are heroes. Campaigner is someone who tries to achieve political or social change by persuading other people or the government to do something. There were a lot of campaigners all other the world during the history that campaigned for human rights and fought against racism, slavery and war. I would like to tell you about some of them.

Leonid Roshal was born in 1934. He is a Russian pediatrician, the head of the Moscow Scientific Research Institute of Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology. He acted as mediator when the terrorists seized School No 1 in Beslan in September 2004 and during the Dubrovka theatre siege. He helps thousands of children from all other the world!

Another important person is Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928). In 19th century women had no rights in Great Britain and she was the person who organized Women’s League and demanded equal rights for women in all areas of life. She took part in a protest march. People called her a” suffragette”, because “suffrage” means “the right to vote”. The police arrested her three times. But finally women won the right for vote.

Also Martin Luther King (1929-1968) campaigned for the rights of black people in the USA. He fought against racism and his actions changed society in America and the rest of the world. He was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was born in India but she travelled to India where she worked as a teacher and a nurse. In 1948 she founded her Order of Missionaries of Charity to serve the blind, diseased and dying among the city’s poor. She spent the whole life working in India with poor and homeless people. She also was awarded a Nobel Prize.

As you know India was one of the British colonies. Mohandas Gandhi was one of the most important persons who fought against British colonialism. He was a pacifist - non-violent activist, who led the independence movement through a non-violent protest. In 1947 British Indian Empire became independent from the British rules and broke into two different countries: India and Pakistan.

Nelson Mandela (1918 – 5 Dec 2013) worked for freedom and democracy in South Africa. He fought against racist in South Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Prize and was President of South Africa from q1994 to 1999.

Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989) was Russian physicist. He is known also as the inventor of the Russian H-bomb and campaigned for civil rights in Soviet Union. He received the Nobel Peace Prize.

I think that these people are heroes because they changed the world. They didn’t hesitate. They are brave and decisive.
