The UK

London draws people from all over the world. Some come on business, some come to study, to work or on holiday. London is naturally a very English city and it is very cosmopolitan, containing goods, food and entertainment, as well as people, from many countries of the world.

London spreads its influence over much of the southern areas of England; it gives work to millions of people who live not only in the inner city areas but in surrounding districts.

There is much in London which fascinates visitors and inspires the affection of Londoners: the splendor of the royal palaces and the Houses of Parliament, the dignity of St. Paul's Cathedral and many monuments and beautiful parks.

London shows examples of buildings that express all the different areas of its history.

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Sovereign. The daily ceremony of the Changing of the Guards takes place in its courtyard. The palace was built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham.

Piccadilly Circus has become an important meeting point - for as well as sightseers. At its heart is a bronze fountain topped by a figure of a winded archer, known as Eros, the pagan god of love.

This area is now famous for its theatres, clubs and shops.

Whitehall is a street in central London running from Trafalgar Square to the Houses of Parliament and containing many important buildings and government offices, such as the Treasury, Admiralty and others. In the centre of the roadway stands the Cenotaph, the memorial to the fallen of both world wars. The Prime Minister's residence at No. 10 Downing Street is directly connected to Whitehall.

London is always full of life. The streets are crowded with traffic. High 'double-decker' buses rise above the smaller cars and vans.

The city of London today is the financial powerhouse of the country and one of the chief commercial centers of the western world.

The city has its own Lord Major, its own Government and its own police force. Here the medieval buildings stand side by side with modern glass high-rise offices.

The parks of London provide a welcome contrast to the great built-up areas. St.James's Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens are linked together. They form 313 hectares of open parkland in the heart of London.

Advertising

Ads is the engine of commerce. The advertisement is necessary nowadays in the conditions of free economic market and concurrence. There are a lot of companies and firms, which are not very different in their production or service. The production is the same, the concurrence is increasing, and that is why the advertisement is important for a company to stand out against other firms. Besides the advertisement is the means so inform people about new products oк services of a company.
There are different types of the advertisement. For example we can divide the advertisements by its purpose. There are commercial advertisement and social advertisement. By-turn the commercial advertisement may represent a new product of a firm in purpose to sell this product or the advertisement may represent the company itself to make its own style and to be recognized among the consumers.
Another division of the types of the advertisement is by its means. I mean, there are TV and radio advertisement, advertisement in newspapers, magazines and in internet and advertisement on posters in the street and in transport. All these types are successful, there are a lot of people, who watch TV, listen to the radio and read the advertisements in transport.
Further the advertisement itself is the business and this business is very profitable. A lot of radio-stations, tv-programs and especially internet-sites are living at the coast of the advertisement, which is given by different firms to bring the information to the people, who use this or that resource for work, entertaining or simply information.
To my mind the most influential advertisement is that on TV. Because only on TV the advertiser can use all the tools to make an attractive commercial. There are a lot of people, who watch TV and they inevitably watch the advertisement.
I am not very influenced by the advertisement. I watch TV very seldom, I use other types of the advertisement only to get information which is interesting for me. And sometimes I read posters in subway only to have some little entertaining in a coach.
I think now there are not many people who are influenced by advertisement. There is too much advertisement around us nowadays, that people avoid to take it in.

6. Magazines
Magazine is one of the major mass media. Magazine is a collection of articles and stories. Usually magazines also contain illustrations.Magazines provide information on a wide range of topics such as business, culture, hobbies, medicine, religion, science, and sports. Some magazines entertain their readers with fiction, poetry, photography or articles about TV, or movie stars.
Magazines are designed to be kept for a longer time in comparison to newspapers and that is "why they are printed on better paper and have covers. Magazines, unlike newspapers, do not focus on daily, rapidly changing events.
There are specialized magazines intended for special business, industrial and professional groups, and consumer magazines intended for general public. There are several kinds of consumer magazines.
Children's magazines contain stories, jokes, articles on subjects especially interesting for children and instructions for making games or useful items.
Hobby magazines are intended for collectors of coins, stamps, and other items; people interested in certain sports or games; photography enthusiasts.
Intellectual magazines provide analysis of current cultural and political events. Many of them publish fiction and poetry as well.
Men's magazines focus on such topics as adventure, entertainment, men's fashion and sports.
Women's magazines deal with child-raising, fashion trends, romance. They offer ideas on cooking and home decorating. Many of the monthlies with big circulations are women's magazines. I prefer to read the magazine “ Caravan Istoriy”. In this magazine you can find much interesting information about public figures, famous actors and actresses, singers and painters.
The magazine is illustrated with photos and reproductions of pictures of famous painters of the past.
I like the magazine’s style very much.
I buy it every month.
Though the magazine contains more than 200 pages I read almost all its articles from beginning to end.

Television

It is almost impossible to imagine our life without TV. It plays a great and a very important role in the life of modern man. There is practically no family that doesn't have a TV set. TV is one of the mass media kinds. Radio and newspapers tell us about different events but TV not only tells but also shows. TV has a lot of channels and everybody can watch the programs he likes. Our television suggests various programs: talk show and game show, news and sporting events, about animals and about foreign countries and so on. Soaps-lovers can watch their favorite films almost every day. TV shows us a lot of films of different countries: detective and melodrama, comedy and triller. As former I like to see adventure films, fantasy, comedies. My favorite sporting events programs are about volleyball, swimming, track-and-field athletics and gymnastic. I watch many programs with great interest. These programs are: a wild nature program, "Anshlag", some game shows and so on. There are a lot of films (most of them of foreign TV-companies) with a great number of corpses, with seas of blood now. It's not very good to my mind. I think that one of the aims of TV is to bring up TV-viewers, to cultivate love to our country, kindness and other positive features of character.

Radio

Еvery modern man listens to the radio every day and often do not even notice it. Radio sounds everywhere: at home, when we are going to study or work in the transport of which we get to work or school, in shops, in which we go along the way.
Of course, there are people who are indifferent to what is heard on the background of their activities. But there are Radioman, indifferent to the choice of listening radio stations. Radio plays an important role in reflecting the life of society and building opinions. It performs the service of information well enough. Radio and keep us informed about current events, extend the education, provide the cultural recreation, allow us to follow the latest developments in science and politics and offer an endless number of programmers which are both instructive and entertaining. Sо radio gives us a lot of useful information and are exciting.

Mass media

We can not imagine our life without mass media. Our Information Age is determined in many respects by the mass media. The mass media do not only spread the news, they impose certain values on contemporary men. The received information moulds the way of people's thinking. Sometimes information given by television, radio, newspapers and the Internet is contradictory and man must decide which one is more reliable.
Previously it took news months to travel from one country to another; today it takes it only several seconds. People started to get news comparatively quickly with the appearance of newspapers. Newspapers are very important for a contemporary man. The choice of the newspapers is wide. Now all newspapers are classified into two groups; quality and popular. Quality newspapers are serious national papers intended for educated readers. Popular newspapers are tabloid, they are designed for common readers. Radio became widely used during World War I. At the turn of the 20th century TV became part of people's daily life. TV offers to its viewers current affairs programs, cultural programs, chat shows, sports programs, etc. It informs, educates and entertains men. The Internet is the recent innovation. It has broken the traditional frontiers and helps people to establish contacts. Due to the Internet I have found a lot friends in different countries, I have visited the greatest world museums and art galleries without leaving my apartment. The Internet is turning our planet into a global village.
To have a comprehensive picture of what is going on, people must watch TV programmes, read newspapers and magazines, use the Internet, but do it selectively.
