2. Text “Samara”

The city of Samara is situated on the left bank of the Volga river. Samara has a continental climate characterized by hot summers and cold winters.

It is one of the largest cities in Russia and it was founded in 1586 on the spot where the Samara river flows into the Volga. One million one hundred and sixty five thousand people live in Samara and its suburbs now. Legend said that Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, later Patron Saint of Samara, visited the site of the city in 1357 and predicted that a great town would be erected there, and that the town would never be ravaged. The Volga port of Samara appears on Italian maps of the 14th century. Before 1586, the Samara Bend was a pirate nest. Officially, Samara started with a fortress built in 1586 at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers. This fortress was a frontier post protecting the eastern boundaries of Russia from forays of nomads. A local customs office was established in 1600.

It was Kuibyshev who proclaimed the Soviet power in Samara and later in 1935 the city was renamedin his honour. But in 1990 Kuibyshev was renamed Samara again.

Like every city, Samara has a charm of its own. The city is changing from day to day. Housing construction is going on a large scale. New houses and streets are growing before our eyes both in the centre and its suburbs of the city. The architecture of the new buildings combines beauty with comforts. Many of the streets have been widen ed and straighten ed. The building of cultural and public establishments is keeping pace with housing construction.

Samara is an important industrial, political, scientific and cultural centre. The port of Samara is one of the biggest ports on the Volga, the port of five seas. There are a lot of universities, institutes, academies, colleges, technical schools, many schools and scientific research institutions here.

Thousands of tourists come to our city. They can see a lot of places of interest in Samara such as the museums of Art, Pyotr Alabin Museum of Regional studies. One can visit palaces of culture, the Circus, the Drama, Opera and Ballet, Puppet and Young Spectator’s theatres, numerous cinemas, night clubs, libraries, palaces of sport, stadiums and swimming pools.

Samara is a modern city with new high beautiful buildings, wide streets and broad avenues lined with trees; with squares and granite embankment along the Volga. There are many green parks in the city and among them there’s a Botanic Garden that is famous for its vast collection of plants. Numerous parks, wide avenues make Samara green and beautiful.

The main square where parades, concerts and public celebrations take place is Kuibyshev square. It’s a large square with four public gardens, the Opera and Ballet theatre and a monument built in honour and memory of V. Kuibyshev.

The Drama theatre that was built in 1888 and has a very interesting architecture is on Chapayev square. Opposite the theatre there is one of the most beautiful monuments. It’s a monument to Chapayev.

One of the most beautiful places in our city is Victory square with the fountains, a monument of Glory and the Eternal Flame.

The street traffic is get ting heavier from day to day. In the morning and evening there are a lot of traffic jams. There are buses, trolley-buses, trams and taxis in Samara. There is also an underground in Samara.

Our city becomes finer and more attractive from year to year.
