SEMINAR I (THE ENGLISH WORD-STOCK)

1. Establish the kind of semantic change involved in the development of the words: to starve (originally "to die"); fowl (originally "bird"); bird (originally "a young bird"); deer (originally "beast").

2. Establish the origin and the immediate source of borrowing of the words: beauty (ME beaute, L. bellus "pretty"), character (ME character, L., Gr. character), comment (F. commenter, L. commentum), umbrella (It. ombrella, L. umbra "shade").
