LEXICOLOGY: EXERCISES TO SEMINARS
SEMINAR I (THE ENGLISH WORD-STOCK) 1. Establish the kind of semantic change involved in the development of the words: to starve (originally "to die"); fowl (originally "bird"); bird (originally "a young bird"); deer (originally "beast"). 2. Establish the origin and the immediate source of borrowing of the words: beauty (ME beaute, L. bellus "pretty"), character (ME character, L., Gr. character), comment (F. commenter, L. commentum), umbrella (It. ombrella, L. umbra "shade"). 3. Below are listed some borrowings from English into Russian. Discuss the form and meaning of the original words: бизнесмен, битник, бутсы, бульдозер, кемпинг, круиз, мокасины, сервис, стриптиз, хэппи-энд, хиппи, хобби. 4. What other words borrowed from English into Russian do you know? 5. Explain why the following words are called hybrids: faintness, fishery, goddess, joyful, murderous, questionable. 6. Supply adjectives of Latin origin corresponding to the following nouns: time, town, youth, sun, sight, sea, nose, mouth, life, father, eye, egg, ear, dog, cat. 9. Compare the meanings of the following words and explain if they are international or “false friend”: faculty - факультет, pretend - претендовать, romance - романс, sentiment - сантименты, sympathize - симпатизировать. 10. Which of the following occasional words used in works of Science Fiction are likely to become neologisms? Explain their meanings: space-port, spacegram; robotics, robopsychologist, robotic engineering; downwhen, homewhen, everywhen, birthen.

Connect on the types of morphemes in the following words: blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, bilberry. 4.
