Next month, students in teams of 4-5 will complete and report a simple research project, using one of these 5 research methods, described in the course: Experiment (E), Observation (O), Survey (S), Archival (A), Norm violation (N). Below is a checklist of some simple projects.

__1. Handshake? Experiment on friendliness. Will adults in a park or street shake the hand of a friendly woman or man? Does this depend on some theoretical factor like gender, neighborhood, ethnicity, disability...?

__2. Candy? Experiment on friendliness. Will adults in a park or street accept wrapped Alanka candy from a friendly woman or man? Does this depend on some theoretical factor like gender, ethnicity, neighborhood, disability...? How about if a child was giving the candy?

__3. Dangling ruble? Experiment on honesty. If someone is losing their money in public, will bystanders notice, and react by stealing/ ignoring/ returning this lost money? Does this depend on some theoretical factor like gender, ethnicity, neighborhood, U.S. dollars v rubles...?

__4. Moscow? Survey. In a survey, what percentage of adults say they live in Moscow because they "like to," or "have to?" Does this depend on some theoretical factors like personality, age, gender, ethnicity, neighborhood...?

__5. Crime? Experiment on bystander behavior. If someone is doing a suspicious act like breaking into a parked car to remove valuables, will bystanders notice and intervene? Does this depend on some theoretical factor like gender/age of the suspect, ethnicity, neighborhood, type of car...?

__6. Hug me! Norm violation. If a friendly person in the park wears a big sign that says "Hug me!" how will pedestrians respond? Does this depend on factors like gender, ethnicity, neighborhood?

__7. Subway? Norm violation. If we replicate Milgram's study by asking people for their seat in the Moscow Metro, will riders give up their seats? Does this depend on some theoretical factor like age, gender, ethnicity...?

__8. Directions? Experiment on helpfulness. Would adults more likely give directions to a confused person in need (on crutches, or a pregnant woman)?

__9. School? Survey. How do students at feel about their school? How much does the vary by school, or by demographics of the students?

__10. Happy? Norm violation. If an adult with a clipboard asked shoppers outside Ashan simply "Are you happy?" how would people react? Does this depend on factors like gender, ethnicity, neighborhood?

__11. Dangling handcuff? Norm violation. If an upset-looking adult with one handcuff dangling from their wrist asked pedestrians for directions to the train to Kazan, how would pedestrians react? Does this depend on factors like gender, ethnicity, neighborhood?

__ Replication? Replicate some urban research by others: Stanley Milgram, Robert Levine, Harold Takooshian. Check Takooshian's website at http://file-id.org/130614/1027, or the ABC-TV website, "What would you do?" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvzj8wyZ9PI or http://watchabc.go.com/what-would-you-do/SH5555951 or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primetime:_What_Would_You_Do%3F

A few research notes: (1) Have recording and debrief cards ready. (2) When feasible, photograph or video a portion of the study, to show in your presentation.
