My family

Our family is neither big, not small. I have a father, a mother and a sister (brother). My father is 40. He is a tall man with dark (fair) short hair. He works in oil industry (in construction, in the North, as a driver, as a driller, as an operator).

My mother is a pleasant woman of 38. She is a beautiful woman with long (short) dark (fair) hair. She is a housewife (a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, a shop-assistant). She combines her work with housekeeping. We help her about the house.

My brother (sister) is 15. He (she) is a schoolboy. He is very funny and curious.

I am 17 (18). I am a student of Oktyabrsky Oil College named after Kuvykin. We study different subjects there. I am slim and slender. I have fair (dark) hair and blue (green, brown, grey, black) eyes. I look like my father (mother). I like to read books. I also like to go to the swimming pool.

Our family is nice and friendly. In the evening we all watch TV, discuss everyday problems.

My daily routine (my working day)

The whole week I get up early in the morning. I go to the bathroom, have a shower, then brush my teeth and go to the kitchen. In the kitchen I usually have a quick breakfast - cereals with milk and orange juice. Then I come back to my bedroom and get dressed.

I leave for college. I catch the bus. My classes start at 8.30 a.m. everyday. At noon, I have lunch in the college canteen, of course with my friends.

After college I come back home. I have dinner. At 7 p.m. I do my homework. Then I walk with my friends. Next, I surf the internet and chat with my friends. I use Skype and Facebook to keep in touch with them.

At 10 p.m. I have a shower, brush my teeth and watch TV. Before 12 p.m. I’m already in my bed.

My flat / house

We live in a comfortable flat (house). There are 3 rooms there – the living-room, my parents bedroom and my bedroom. We have also a kitchen, a bathroom, a hall and a balcony.

Our living-room is large and light. There is no much furniture – a sofa, two arm-chairs and a TV-set. We like to sit here in the evening and watch TV.

Our parents’ bedroom is very cosy. There is a big bed, a wardrobe, two armchairs and a TV-set in it.

My bedroom is the best room in our flat. There is a bed, a table with a computer and a chair there. The bookcase is near the door. There are many books there. When my friends come, I invite them to my room.

Hobby

Hobby can be any type of activity which people do during their free time. People choose a hobby for relaxation, pleasure and for development of new interests. Hobby can be divided into 4 categories (the arts, handicraft, collecting, games and sport).

The art forms can be – dancing, drama, painting, graphic arts and music.

Collecting is the most widespread kind of hobby, because you can collect anything.

Handicrafts attract people who can work skillfully with their hands.

Games and sports are popular with people who enjoy competition, physical activity and exercise.

Formal and informal education (p 122)

Education is the ways by which people learn skills, gain knowledge and understanding about the world and about themselves.

There are 2 kinds of education – formal and informal.

Informal education involves people in learning during their daily life. People learn skills on their own initiative without a teacher. For example, children learn how to speak simply by hearing and trying to speak themselves.

Formal education is the instructions given in different schools, colleges, universities. Learners pass tests and exams to show how well they have progressed in their education. At the end of their education they get a certificate, a diploma or a degree.
