Дієслово минулого часу

He had translated the text. – Він переклав текст.

У питальній формі допоміжне дієслово ставиться перед підметом.

Had he written the report by 9 o'clock? - Чи написав він твір до 9-ї години?

У заперечній формі після допоміжного дієслова вживається заперечна частка -not-:

He had not studied English before he entered the institute. — Він не вивчав англійську до того, як вступив до інституту.

В усному мовленні в заперечних і в питальних формах вживається також скорочена форма hadn't.

I hadn't called her by that time - До того часу я їй не телефонував.
