Hi, there! And welcome to Friday night on Radio Manchester. The weather is cold and wet – surprise, surprise. So stay in and listen to me, Tracey Clark, and lots of great music.

Talking about music…. What kind of music are young people buying these days? A report in The Guardian newspaper shows that pop is still the top: just over 50 per cent prefer nice, normal pop songs. Quite right, I say. Number two on the list is heavy metal and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll. Fans make up 22 per cent of album-buyers. For you in the 22 per cent, I am playing some Metallica later on the programme. Dance fans are down at 15 per cent. Not bad. Young classical music buyers are only 5 per cent of the age - group. I’m sorry, Mr. Beethoven! Fans of folk songs are just 2 per cent. But right at the bottom is jazz. Less than 1 per cent of young people buy jazz tapes and CDs. Tut, tut, I don’t know. What’s wrong with kids these days? I love jazz myself, but I’m 25 … I’m an old woman!
