Jamaica

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sea which is an independent state and a member of the British COMMONWEALTH. Population: 2,889,187 (2012). Capital: Kingston. Many SLAVE s were brought there from Africa from the 17th to the 19th centuries to work on the sugar and banana farms. Jamaica is now known as a beautiful place for tourists to visit, and as the home of REGGAE music and the RASTAFARIAN religion. Japan is a country in E Asia consisting of four large islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu and many smaller ones. The main religions are Shinto and Buddhism. When people think of Japan, they think of parts of its traditional culture, such as geishas wearing beautiful kimonos and sumo wrestlers.

 

People in the US also remember Pearl Harbor – an important US naval base in Hawaii, which was suddenly attacked by Japanese planes in December 1941. Many warships were destroyed or damaged, and this caused great shock and anger in the US, and made the US start fighting in World War II.

 

On 11 March 2011, Japan suffered the strongest earthquake in its recorded history; this triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, one of the worst disasters in the history of nuclear power.
