THE ESCAPE

¯I ¯have ˎalways been conˎvinced | that if a ˎwoman | 'once made up her ˏmind | to 'marry a ˏman, | ˎnothing but ‘instant ˎflight could ˌsave him. 'Not ˌalways ˎthat. For ˎonce | a ˎfriend of ˏmine, | seeing the ˎinevitable ˌloom ˎmenacing ˎbefore ˌhim, | ¯took a ˎship | from a 'certain ˎport, | with a ˎtoothbrush for ˎall his ˎluggage (¯so ‘conscious was he of his ˎdanger | and the ne'cessity for ˎimmediate ˏaction) and 'spent a ˎyear 'travelling 'around the ˎworld. But ˏwhen | ˌˌthinking ˌˌhimself >safe (ˌwomen are ‘fickle, he ˌsaid, ¯and ¯in 'twelve ˎmonths she 'may have ˏforgotten me) he ''landed at the ''selfsame ˎport, | the 'first ˎperson he ˌsaw | 'gaily ˎwaving to him from the ˏquay | was the 'little ˎlady | from 'whom he had >fled.

''I have ''’only ˎonce ˌknown a ˏman | ˌwho in 'such ˎcircumˏstances | 'managed to ˎ’extricate ˏhimself. His 'name was #Roger ˎCharing. He was 'no longer ˎyoung | when he ˌˌfell in ˌˌlove with ˌˌRuth ˏBarlow; and he had ˎhad 'sufficient ˎexperience | to 'make him ˎcareful. Bu(t) 'Ruth ˏBarlow | ¯had ¯a ˎgift (or 'should I >call it a ‘quality) ¯that ¯renders ˎmost men ˏdefenseless. ¯And ¯it ¯was ˎthis | tha’t ˌdisposed ˎˏRoger of his ''’own ''common ˎsense, | ¯his ˎprudence | and his 'worldly ˎwisdom. He went 'down like a 'row of ˎninepins. 'This was the #gift of ˎpathos. ¯Mrs ˎˏBarlow, | >for ¯she ¯was ˎtwice a ˎwidow, | had ˎsplendid ˌdark ˏeyes, | and they were the most >moving ‘I 'ever ˎsaw. ¯They ˎseemed to be ˎever on the ˌpoint of 'filling with ˎtears. ¯They ''suggested that the ''world was #too ˎmuch for ˌher | and you 'felt >that, | ˎpoor ˌdear, her ˎsufferings had been 'more than ˎ’anyone should be ˌasked to ˌbear. ˎ’If | ˎlike ˌRoger ˎˏCharing, | you were a ˏstrong, | 'hefty ˏfellow | with 'plenty of /money | ¯it ¯was '’almost ˎinevitable | that ˌyou should ˌˌsay to ˏyourself: | “¯I ‘must ˌstand between the ˎhazards of ˎlife ¯and ¯this ‘helpless little ˏthing. 'Oh, ˌhow ˎwonderful it would ˌbe | to 'take the ˎsadness out of those ˏbig and 'lovely ˎeyes!”

I ˎgathered from ˏRoger | that ˎeveryone had ˌtreated Mrs. ˌBarlow ‘very ˌbadly. She was \apparently one of >those ¯unˎfortunate ˏpersons with whom ˎnothing by ˎ’any ˌchance | 'goes ˎright. 'If she 'married a ˎhusband he ˎbeat her, | if she ˏemployed a ˏbroker he ˎcheated her, | ¯if ¯she 'engaged a ‘cook she ˏdrank. She had ˎnever had a little ˏlamb | but it was ˎsure to ˏdie.

&When 'Roger ‘told me | that he had ¯at ˎlast ˌˌpersuaded ˌˌher to ˎmarry ˏhim ''I ''wished him ˏˎjoy.

by William Shakespeare

То >bе, | or ˎnot to be | - 'that is the \question; ||

'Whether ‘tis 'nobler in the ‘’mind | to ‘suffer |

The \slings and ’‘arrows | of out'rageous \fortune, |

¯Or to 'take ’‘arms a'gainst a "sea of ‘’troubles, |

And 'by op‘’posing ’‘end them? || To ˎˏdie, to ’‘sleep | -

'No ‘more; | and 'by a ‘sleep | to 'say we ‘end |

The ‘heartache and the "thousand 'natural \shocks

That 'flesh is \heir to || Tis a 'consum‘’mation

De‘’voutly | to be ‘wish’d || To ‘’die, | to \sleep; ||

To ’sleep, | per‘chance to ‘dream. || ‘Ay, ‘there’s the ‘rub; |

For 'in that 'sleep of ‘’death | 'what ‘dreams may \come,

When 'we have >shuffled ˎoff this 'mortal \coil, |

'Must >give us | \pause.
