Holidays in Russia. There are many holidays in our country

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year's Day, Christmas, Women's Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.

I like New Year's Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year. The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don't go to school and my parents don't go to work. We usually have got a very interesting New Year's party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.

Our family prepares for this holiday. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year's tree. I like to decorate it with toys, little colored lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake. All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o'clock in the evening.

At 12 o'clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, "Best wishes for the New Year!" I hope that next year will be better than the last one. We don't go to bed till morning; we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes. I enjoy this holiday very much.

Maslenitsa

“Maslenitsa” is the week before Lent. It’s when the Russians say goodbye to winter and welcome to spring. It’s the time of singing, dancing and fun. There’s a lot to eat, too – especially blini, which are delicious butter pancakes,

Children dress up and play in the snow. We go for sleigh rides, go sledging, have snowball fights and lots more. We make a straw fights of “Lady Maslenitsa”. Who dressed in special clothes. On Sunday evening, we burn Lady Maslenitsa on a big bonfire. The spring festival is over and Lent begins.

The last Thursday in November is a Thanksgiving day. It’s the most important day in the American year. People go to church, and families come together for the day. They decorate their houses with the fruit and flowers of the autumn and prepare traditional food: roast turkey, potatoes and pumpkin. The first colonist came to America and his life was very hard. They started to farm a land. The work was very difficult. The winter was very hard. There were a lot of wild birds much bigger than chicken. The native Indians helped colonists to farm the land and to breed these birds – turkeys. In autumn they had their first harvest, it was very good. The colonists decided to have a special dinner and to thank God. It lasted three days. It was the beginning if this tradition.

Shopping

Our family has a shopping day. It’s Sunday. My father asks mother what we need to buy and we go to the shops. We usually visit the baker’s shop. We buy theresweets, bread and rolls. We always need milk, cheese, eggs, butter and sausages. I don’t like fish but father buys it because it’s very useful. I like fried chicken and ask father to buy it too. We like to drink tea very much, so we choose tea very carefully. Father buys coffee for himself, but I don’t like it.

We have already a lot of bags and we need some rest. So I buy an ice-cream and my father and I are sitting on the bench and are enjoying our rest. Soon we return home and my mother makes very tasty dinner. I like do shopping because I feel myself useful for my family.

Travelling

I like to travel. There are different types of travelling. I like to travel by car. It’s interesting. You can see many things in a short time. It’s the cheapest way of travelling. We can stop any time and have rest in a beautiful place. But when we go very far it’s tiresome (утомительно) trip.

The most comfortable is travelling by train. I like special atmosphere which you can feel in train. I like to watch these endless pictures of our country in the window. It’s so pleasant to sleep swinging a little from side to side.

Travelling by the air is the quickest and very expensive way. But I hate to spend long hours waiting for our plane. But there are places in the world where you can get only by plane.

I have never travelled by ship and it’s my dream. Maybe when I become grown-up I will buy a ticket for large ocean ship and take a voyage somewhere. I will sit on the deck, watch the passing ships and seagulls and I will be the happiest person in the world.
