THE SCIENTIST I’D LIKE A NEW STREET TO BE NAMED AFTER

New inventions are appearing every day to make our life better But only a few inventors design a new machine or product that becomes so well-known that -he invention is named after its creator And there are even less scientists who become a real hero, devoting all his life to his nation and science To my mind, one of them is Lomonosov. And I am proud to live in Moscow, where one of the widest and most beautiful avenues is named after this great scientist

M. V. Lomonosov was born in 1711 in the village of Demsovka near Arkhangelsk in the family of a fisherman At the age of 17 he left his native village and began

his studies so late in Moscow, at the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy. Then he studied at the Academy of Sciences at St Petersburg I Jier he studied metallurgy and mining abroad

Lomonosov founded a new science that we call today physical chemistry He also studied electrical phenomena in atmosphere of the Earth.

Lomonosov was a great scientist His works in poetry had a great influence on Russian literature Owing to his efforts, the first Russian University was founded in Moscow in 1755 The university named after him became the centre of knowledge

and science in Russia.

THE HISTORIC VOYAGE I WISH I HAD TAKEN PART IN

If it was possible I'd like to take part in Columbus expedition. His discovery of America was the event of great importance. America was founded by Columbus in 1492. Columbus started this expedition because he wanted to persuade Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish king and queen, that the Earth is round. They refused to believe the fact, even when Columbus showed them an egg. Before Columbus reached America, which he named after a man called American Vesuvius, he cried "Ceylon! Ceylon!" because he wanted to see India. Columbus was mistaken in thinking he had reached India when actually he had not got even as far as Indiana. Columbus, who was as confused as anybody who has been at sea for a long time, called the first people he saw "Indians". It is not known what they called Columbus. The original Americans are still known as "Indians', while all immigrants from England, Ireland, Angora and Lichtenstein are referred to as "Americans". Accompanied by his devoted followers, the Knights of Columbus, Columbus made several other voyages in search of India. Try as he might, however, he kept discovering America and finally returned to Spain to die.

Truly speaking, it is very difficult to predict now what forms of city traffic will be eliminated in the future. Let us take trams. Some 20 years ago trams seemed to be very uncomfortable kind of transport for big cities - they demand rather much space on the road, an rather noisy and slow. But when the people faced the problem of pollution in big cities, trams turned to be one of the most ecologically clear kind of city transport. But now we live at the age of high speeds, we are always in a hurry. So we need the suitable transport to reach a certain place in shortest possible time. Underground is a very comfortable and quick transport, but one of the most dangerous, especially now. Moreover, there are a lot of other types of communications, laid under the surface and the construction of the underground (metro) cannot be endless. There are great number of taxis in Moscow and other big cities - but it brings a lot of jams in rush hours. Buses and trolley-buses cannot solve the problem also. Maybe, future belongs to monorails, maybe, to helicopters - in cases of emergency it is the best transport for big and small cities, and even for villages that are situated far from civilization.

My Institute

MADI was founded in 1930. The main aim of the University is the preparation of highly qualified specialists. Professors and lecturers of the University are the authors of a big amount of textbooks and tutorials. A lot of them are accepted by institutions of higher education in our country. Several of them are translated from Russian into foreign languages. The training of personnel is led on 3 departments: day-time, evening and correspondence. MADI has 8 faculties, which provide preparation in 22 specialities with the common contingent about 10 000 people The advanced students of the day-time department get grants. The apprenticeship in day-time department is 5 years, in evening department - 5 years and 9 months

Students studying for first level learn technical subjects, sciences and humanities, they have lectures and seminars. On the second level students get vocational training Those who pass examinations successfully are given the Bachelor's degree After that they can work or continue studying at the University Those who complete the third level are given the Engineer degree Master’s degree is the highest degree. It is given for some original research work, which is an important contribution to knowledge. mm

The institute is provided with such modem technical training aids as films, radio, television, computes and so on. Much attention is paid to the last achievements in the fields of electronics and automation.

MADI has a hostel, which is situated not far from the Institute Many people from other countries and from different regions of Russia live there.

The cultural life of the Institute is very interesting. The students take part in amateur performances, they make different concerts and festivals,

they go on trips and voyages.

I like my institute, I think it is interesting to study here.

My School

First of all I'd like to tell you about my school which I've just left. My school is one of the specialized schools in Ufa. It is famous for its high-quality education and strict discipline. To my mind, our school-lyceum is very- well equipped. It has a gym, a canteen, a library, a computer class and some labs(for example - chemistry lab and physics lab).

First two years in our lyceum we had 7 or 8 lessons, but in 10th and 11th forms we had less lessons. What about our homework we usually had a lot to do and it took me several hours. I sometimes had to sit up to write a composition, to prepare a report, to translate an article from English to Russian or to learn a poem by heart.

After classes we usually had some out-of-class activities. Our social and cultural life was well- organized.

At school we had classes in Russian, literature, mathematics. English, history and so on. My favorite subjects w ere English. History and Russian. On Russian we had a lot of fun situations and talks; history, to my mind, is a very interesting subject; and what about English, we need learning this language to be able to read books, listen to the news, speak with English speaking people and so on.

Now my plans for the future. I must say that when you leave school you understand that the time to choose your future profession has come. It's not an easy task to make the right choice of a job. People choose profession according to their own interests and abilities. As far as I have interest at tech subjects I've decided to enter some tech institute. It is called MADI. I`m glad that I choose that institute.
