May I have your autograph?
1. At the age of eight Marjorie Weiman Sharmat published The Snooper’s Gazette with a friend in Portland, Maine. She is now best known to younger readers for her more than 60 books. M. Sharmat entered the young adult field in l982 by writing the novelization of the hilarious CBS-TV situation comedy Square pegs. Her most recent young adult books are How to Meet a Gorgeous Guy and How to Meet a Gorgeous Girl. Mrs. Sharmat lives in Tuscon, Arizona. 3. the title prepares us to the context of the text. This is a story about Wendy, who wants to get an autograph from her favourite rook star – Craig the Cat. 4. The story takes place in the lobby of the hotel. The description of the hotel and the stuff (I am sitting in an overstuffed chair…) prepare us to picture of rock-star’s life and show Wendy’s excitement before metting with her favourite star (Wendy, who dragged me here) 5. chronological. 6. exposition-when Wendy dragged author to the hotel to take autograph; climax-when Wendy noticed Craig the Cat and followed him; denouement-when they finished eating and she got the autograph. 7. 1st person. 8. a lot of dialogues which sometimes break off with author’s narrations and some descriptions(I am surrounded by overgrown terns…)(I look up. A guy who seems to be about 20 or 25…) 9.the minor conflict is external(fans disturb their favourite stars). The major conflict is internal (Wendy’s boundless love to Craig the Cat, she is able to do everything to see her favourite star and get the autograph). 10. The main characters are Wendy and Craig the Cat and the minor characters are Craig’s mother and the author. Wendy is a devoted fan of Craig, she tries to get autograph by any way. The author doesn’t understand her blind love and her passion but he tries to help her. And the mother is also Craig’s manager and she protects her son from the fans(Craig’s mother is beaming benevolently… Craigs mother glares at the photographer …) (But that doesn’t stop her from being in love with him-Wendy). 11. indirect (through actions, speech); direct (author’s descriptions). 13. I don’t understand Wendy. I think that it is foolish to be such a devoted, crazy fan. 14. colloquial 15. the tone and atmosphere are exiting, the atmosphere of expectation some important event for Wendy. 17. dialogues with simple, short sentences (I know. Lots of luck. How do you know?); exclamations (you’re Craig the Cat! Shoo!); a lot of questions(receptive to what? How do you know?); set expressions (lot of luck, believe in luck, will be OK, special friend);epithets (overstuffed chair, long, furry arms, ordinary guy, wonderful day metaphors: silly-looking uniforms, dirty looks, fat chairs); Comparisons(he looks like an ordinary guy, Craig’s mother is beaming benevolently like a contented mother cat…); repetitions (I knew, it’s him, shoo! How do you know?) 18. the story about a girl who wants to get autograph from her favourite rock-star 19.The message is explicit. It is story about what some people can do to achieve their aims. 20. I like this story because it is interesting and fanny. The story shows the life of stars and their fans. And how crazy the fans can be when they want to get the autograph.
4.Do you want my opinion? 1)M.E. Kerr was born Marijane Meaker in Auburn, NY. She attended the University of Missouri and then moved to New York City, where she published her first story in the Ladies’ Home Journal in l95l. Her earliest and best-known novel, Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack! is about an overweight girl who “overdoses” on food to compensate for the lack of attention from her parents. Many of her novels – The Son Of Someone Famous; If I Love You; Am I Trapped forever?; Is That You, Miss Blue?; and, more recently, What I Think of You – have more intricate plots. In addition to Ms. Kerr’s award-winning novels for teenagers, as M.J. Meaker she has written books for adults and has published adult mysteries under the name of Vin Parker. E.R. Kerr own zany teen-age adventures and the models for some of her adolescent characters are described in her recent autobiography, Me Me Me Me Me Me, Not a Novel. 3) The function is to show what the text is about. 4) The setting here is poorly described. We can see only graffiti which are written on the walls of the bathroom in the school. It proves that it is the teenager’s story. 5) psychological 6) exposition is the first four sentences. the complication is when he talks to his father. The climax is on the class of thoughts. There is no denouement. 7) 1st person narration 8) protagonist’s narration, dialogues. There are no descriptions of people and setting. There is description of the schoolyard, where all pupils kiss each other and only who in love can talk. 9) internal conflict is in John, contradiction between desirable and common. External is in this world, where everything is upside down, contradiction between the body and the thoughts. 10) Main character is John. He is a typical teenager, who is growing up. He smokes, and argues with his father. We don’t know about his inner world and his appearance. Minor are father, Lauren, Edna, Mr. Porter. Lauren is very impulsive and brave girl. She has her own opinion and she told that. 11) Indirect. We can only see that Edna has blond hair and she is beautiful through the author’s speech. The rest is through the dialogues. 12) The author’s expression isn’t expressed. 13) My attitude to the main character is neutral. He is a typical teenager. Lauren deserves respect for her courage to say her real thoughts. 14) colloquial style. Slang expression: “the heck with it”. Rhetorical questions: “Who knows?” ect., artistic names of Picasso, Lennon, geographical names. 15) teenager’s story and teenager’s atmosphere. 16) “The Catcher in the Rye”, graffiti, cigarettes. 17) comparison: “hair smell like the sun, lips tasted as sweet as red summer apples”. Sweetheart, darling, dear, Epithets: winding walk, profound or shallow music. Many gerunds: lovemaking, loving things, discussing, waking, sleeping.etc. 18) “Bodies are all alike, but ideas are individual and personal” 19) implicit message. Author wanted to tell us the world which is close to ours. It shows us a world in which we will live if we don’t stop to behave like this. We should change our vallues, and attitude to the lovemaking and exchanging ideas. 20) the story is rather unusual and it gives us an opportunity to think over our behavior and our way of life.
