Note:

Novelty ­– новизна; the meaning (value) of novelty

novel (new) – новый, неизведанный; a novel idea: (The work is new to him / A new aspect was discovered / This area of research is new to me /

He is new at the job of investigation / We must make some new experiment / We ring in the new in this area of research.)

Novelty – 1) the state of being novel (new: not like anything known before: a novel suggestion, something we hadn’t tried before);

2) something new and unusual: It was quite a novelty to give such an explanation to these facts.

3) newness; quality of being novel: The novelty of his investigation soon wore off. Everybody became accustomed to it.

4) previously unknown thing, idea; smth. strange or unfamiliar.

1. & ² Read these extracts from the scientific discussion about the novelty of post-graduates’ research. Give your commentaries to the sub-titles to this Unit. Do you think them to be true in respect to your investigation?
