EMERGENCY RESCUE OPERATIONS

The main task of the Civil Protection Service employees is to rescue people trapped in burning or demolished buildings, various accidents and to protect population from ruinous consequences of natural and ecological disasters. They must also save victims from gaseous areas and electrical contact. When rescuers arrive at the emergency scene they usually do the size-up. It includes learning the facts of the emergency situation: manpower, rescue equipment and plan of action.

When firefighters enter a burning building they must be ready to move the occupants to a safe place. Very often the fire cuts the exits and in order to reach such victims, rescuers must use fire ladders.

When the workers of CPS rescue people from a demolished building, they must have a good knowledge of a building construction and collapse. Rescue tools and equipment are necessary in this case. During rescue operations the employees of CPS help lightly and heavily trapped victims. Firefighters immediately save lightly trapped victims. The rescue of heavily trapped victims is a more complicated task. It requires more time. Sometimes it is necessary to dig a tunnel as a means of escape.

To reach the victims in a gaseous area is dangerous for respiratory organs of rescuers. They protect themselves with breathing equipment.

In order to save a victim in contact with electrical energy, it is necessary for firefighters to deal with live wires. This operation is extremely dangerous and the workers take all possible measures not to be injured with electricity. The rescuers cut the wire on both sides of the victim. Under any circumstances they must not permit themselves or their clothing to touch the wire or the victims until they are clear.

The most important element in rescue work is time. Rescue operations must be speedy and safe.
