2. Friends

When one is in trouble his true friend in need...

■ gets in touch, writes or rings right away, realising the longec it's left the harder it gets

■ makes it clear he is there for his friend, can be contacted at any time and will go round if he can

■ does everything to provide a calming presence

■ offers his help

■ tactfully asks questions and gives some advice and sugges­tions if necessary

■ puts himself in his friend's situation

■ does all he can to support the friend.

There are many proverbs about true friends in all the languages. The most popular English proverb says:

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Here are a few English proverbs people may use soothing their friends who are in trouble:

1. A storm in a tea-cup.

2. Every cloud has a silver lining.

3. What can't be cured, must be endured.

4. Don' trouble trouble till trouble troubles you.

5. An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.
