3. Davos and sports

Davos, which is most of all known as a ski centre in the mountains of Switzerland, is no pretty little Alpine village. It is a rather large, ugly flat-roofed town. At 1560 meters it boasts of being the highest town in Europe and the views up out of the town towards the mountains are impressive.

Though Davos has a life apart from skiing, it is a
major year-round international conference centre,
it offers a wide range of facilities of a ski resort.
The various ski areas of the Davos region are
not well interlinked, but because they are in
different locations, it is always possible to find
good conditions in at least one of them. The
main ski area at Davos is in the Parsenn region
which is popular for intermediate and advanced skiers. There are
plenty of broad, open pistes, as well as some challenging mogul;
slopes. The most remarkable of these runs is down from the top of!
the Weissenflungipfel, 2844 meters long. In good snow-conditions,;,
really adventurous skiers can ski one of the longest runs in?
Europe. Davos is also immensely proud of its 4 km floodlit cross-!
country track. There are a further 75 km of trails in the area, as:
well as 60 km of cleared walks. |

The resort also offers skating, on the largest natural ice rink in Europe, J
and curling, swimming, horse riding, toboganning and sleigh-rides. j
Numerous restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cinemas and other en- j
tertainments make Davos a sophisticated apres-sports town. J

4. A TV program about Bournemouth

Commentator: Just under two million people visit Bournemouth every year. It is a very popular holiday resort, and it's easy to see why. Bournemouth Bay has seven miles of sandy beach, and the town offers plenty of things to do, both outdoors and indoors.

While the commentator speaks, various scenes of Bournemouth are shown: the cliffs and beach, the pier, a busy street with the tourist information centre, a young girl paddling in the sea with a

lif

bucket, another crowded Bournemouth beach, the Pavilion thea^ tre, posters for concerts, the Bournemouth shopping arcade, the new Conference Centre on construction.

Commentator: Tourists don't come to Bournemouth all the year round, however. And Bournemouth: works hard to attract other people too. This* new International Conference Centre isJ scheduled to open in 2000. Its main hall will; seat up to four thousand conference dele* gates. Or it can be used as an exhibition area| or as a sports centre. It should help to keep people coming to the town even when it's no| the holiday season. Seems like sensibly planning. Or does it? What do the people o| Bournemouth think about it? Woman: Oh, I'm against it. It will attract a lot more? people to Bournemouth, and I think; Bournemouth is quite busy enough already. |

Youngish man: Well, I don't really know. Well, I don't thinly it's going to make much difference to me personally. But it's costing rather a lot, isn't it?! I'd have thought that Bournemouth had: enough conference facilities already.

Middle-aged man: Well, I'm all in favour of it. It'll bring people into the town. And that means it'll bring money. It's good for trade. Everyone benefits.; I think it's a very good idea. I'm all for it.

Commentator: So, opinions are divided. Is it welcome evidence of planning for prosperity, or is it one more example of the way we are destroying our own environment? Town development can be highly controversial.
