Omsk is the great cultural centre of the West Siberian region of Russia. There are more than 900 libraries, 1379 clubs, 7 theatres, 46 cinemas, a circus, the Omsk Philharmonic Society, the Concert Hall, the Hall of organ music, 6 state and 82 public museums, the Omsk Symphony Orchestra, the Shebalin Music College, and the Omsk Russian Ensemble in the region.

Citizens of Omsk are really great theatre-goes. Most of them know a lot of theatre performances and would surely recommend you to visit one in the Drama theatre or the Musical Theatre, or in the famous Puppet theatre “Arlekin”. One can enjoy all kinds of performances there.

The local more than 100-year-old Omsk State Academic Drama Theatre is one the oldest and most recognized in the country. Its building – a pearl of Siberian baroque – was erected in 1905. The actors of the theatre went abroad to Poland and the USA, France and Germany and some of them made successful carriers in the cinematography and the premiere theatres of the county such as Sergey Chonishvili, Nikolai Chindyaikin, Lubov Polischuk, Valentina Talysina. The managers of France, England, the USA, Germany, Japan have taken constant interest in the theatre.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Omsk Philharmonic Society was established in 1956. According to the results of the competition of the Russian orchestras in 1984 it was recognized as the best one and was awarded to the title of Laureate (the first prize). The repertoire of the orchestra includes the wide spectrum of home and foreign music and the greatest musicians worked with it. The Omsk Russian Folk Choir [kwaiƏ] (the Russian Ensemble) was established in 1950. The art of the Ensemble was always greeted with applause in more than 25 countries. The international tournament of young violinists under the auspices of the Great Russian musician Vladimir Spivakov is going to take place every 2 years in Omsk.

The Fine Arts Museum named after Vrubel possesses wide collection of art value in Russia. Paintings, drawings, water-colours, sculptures, arts and crafts of home and West European authors are represented in its expositions. The Literature Museum by Dostoevsky keeps in its funds the things and manuscripts connected with the history of the town on the Irtysh, with the Decembrists, Dostoevsky, Martynov, Vasiliev, Ivanov. Besides, there is a Museum of Modern Arts, the Museum of Local Lore (Regional Study), the Museum of Military Glory and many private art galleries and collections at the people’s disposal in Omsk.

Omsk is a significant educational centre in Siberia. There are 10 state educational establishments of higher learning in the city, many colleges, vocational schools, commercial educational institutions and affiliations. Among them are Classical University named after Dostoevsky, the Siberian Automobile and Highway Academy, the Medical Academy, the Agricultural Academy, the Railway Engineers Academy, Pedagogical University, Technical University, the University of Physical Training, the Institute of Service and some research centres. We also have the Higher Militia School, the Siberian Cadet Military College, the Shebalin Music College, and the Higher Military Institute.

Omsk used to be called the garden city. Fine green parks and gardens with beautiful flowers and different kinds of trees can still be seen in the city. There is now a green belt surrounding the central part of the right bank of the Irtysh River named the Green Island of Omsk. Various sorts of entertainments are greatly visited by the city dwellers.

Sports is also a point of interest for the people of Omsk. There are lots of sports facilities developed in the city. Almost every district has now its own sports complex. The Irtysh Complex-Hall for Sports and Concerts named after the outstanding Russian hockey player from Omsk Alexander Blinov, and up-to-date Sports Complex “Arena” are at our disposal. Omsk is also famous by its sportsmen and sports schools not only in the country but abroad. The well recognized hockey team “Avanguard” is greatly loved by its fans in the city and is quite popular out of it.
