The Omsk Region is situated in the south of West-Siberian Plain, in the middle stream of the river Irtysh. Its territory of 460 square kilometers constitutes 0.8 % of the territory of Russian Federation located between 71-76 degrees North and latitude 53-58 degrees South with altitude of 60-120 meters above sea level. The region borders in the west and north on Tyumen Region, in the east on Tomsk and Novosibirsk Regions, in the south and the south-west on the Kazakhstan Republic.

The region belongs to subtaiga, forest-steppe and steppe native-climatic zones of temperature zone. Climate is continental: summer is warm but short, winter is long and cold. The average temperature in January is –15-20 degrees, the average temperature in July is + 20 degrees.

Omsk is three hours ahead of Moscow time, difference with Greenwich Mean Time being 6 hours in winter and 7 hours in summer.

There are 2,929 rivers with the total length of 15,479 km and 2,549 lakes with the total surface of 177,103 hectares in the Region. The river Irtysh, the main watery artery, runs 1,192 km over the region’s territory from southwest to northwest. Forests 4,494.9 thousand hectares. Their total wood stock is 571.2 cubic meters. Percentage of forestland is 32%. Leafed and conifer forests are situated in northern areas.

Natural resources of the Omsk Region are connected with the history of the plain’s relief formation and are represented by hundreds of deposits of brick and haydite clays, sands, peat, sapropel, bentonite, lime materials, mineral salts, and therapy mud, thermal and mineral waters. Resources of oil and gas are explored in the north of the Omsk Region. In 2001 industrial development of the southern part of Krapivinskoye oilfield began. Facilities construction at the Tevrizskoye gas-condensate field is underway. A large deposit of zirconium-titanium sands and rare earth has been explored. There are brine springs in the Region.

The Region comprises 32 administrative districts, 6 towns 24 settlements with the population of 2,164 thousand people. Density of population is 15.5 people per sq.km. The Region is industrial-agrarian, where industrial entities and organizations with unique production potential are concentrated. Labour resources are represented by highly qualified specialists engaged in various branches of economy. Size of economically active population is 1,042.4 thousand people.
