Our University was established due to the rapid development of huge industrial enterprises which lacked highly-qualified engineers and technical staff. So on the 20th of February, 1964, by the Regulation of the Government of the Russian Federation there was established Kursk Polytechnic Institute. 150 people became full-time students majoring in two fields – ‘Machine-Building Technology and Metal-Cutting Tools and Equipment’ and ‘Artificial and Synthetic Fibre Technology’. Soon it became clear that two faculties were not enough, so new faculties were founded.

Nowadays the University comprises 8 faculties and more than 60 specialties. More than 1000 professors and Grand PhDs train our students in different fields of study. There are about 30 fields of post-graduate study at the University.

In 1994 Kursk Polytechnic Institute became Kursk State Technical University.

In 2010 Kursk State Technical University became South-West State University.

Being a fast growing center of education, science and technology, SWSU (KSTU) is among the best universities in Russia. Now, more than 14,000 students are getting their degrees at the University. The most important aim of SWSU is to train highly-qualified specialists.

Twenty years ago the University started training foreign students. Stable international links have been established with many educational and research institutions of different countries like Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Turkey, India, France, Columbia, Malaysia etc. Nowadays a lot of students from 25 countries study at our University.

At the moment SWSU is carrying out some governmental and joint scientific researches. Different international and all-Russian scientific conferences are regularly held here.

There are good traditions in training well-qualified experts for the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America at our University. They undergo their training in different fields of science and technology.

The educational process is held in spacious buildings that occupy a vast area. At present the University is constantly being expanding and renovating its material basis. The biggest in the Kursk Region University’s scientific library welcomes students and provides them with a wide range of reference books, literature in science and art.

There are many dormitories, a sports centre, a medical centre, an entertainment centre on the University campus. The entertainment centre provides students with all the facilities to relax and enjoy themselves. Our students are involved in different activities: amateur performances, intellectual contests, international competitions. The University provides best sport facilities. The physical training classes take part during four years of studies. Additional educational work is conducted in sport sections and groups of physical training. There are a lot of Masters of sport among students of our University, some of them are world-class sportsmen.
