Schooling is compulsory for 12 years, for all children aged 5 to 16. There are two voluntary years of schooling thereafter. Children may attend either state-funded or fee-paying independent schools. In England, the primary education lasts from five to 11. In fact, children enter infant school, moving on to junior school at the age of 7, and then on to secondary school at the age of 11. About 90 per cent of children receive their secondary education at «comprehensive» schools.

A comprehensive school is a state school that admits pupils of all abilities, and therefore without any academic selection procedure.

Grammar Schools are selective. Entrance is based on a test of ability, usually at 11 years old. Grammar schools are single-sexed schools. That means that children either go to a Boys' Grammar School or a Girls' Grammar School. All schools in England are required to follow the National Curriculum, which is made up of twelve subjects. The core subjects are English, Mathematics and Science. They are compulsory for all students aged 5 to 16.

The other National Curriculum core subjects are: history, geography, modern foreign languages, design and technology, information and communication technology, music, art and physical education.

After five years of secondary education, students take examinations in a range of subjects at the level of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). The GCSE is a single-subject examination set. Students usually take up to ten (there is no upper or lower limit) GCSE examinations in different subjects, including mathematics and the English language.

After taking GCSEs, students may leave secondary schooling. Alternatively, they may choose to continue their education at vocational or technical colleges, or they may take a higher level of secondary school examinations known as AS-Levels after an additional year of study. Following two years of study, students may take A-Level (short for Advanced Level) examinations, which are required for university entrance in the UK.
