Science in Ukraine

Ukraine has a powerful scientific potential. Ukrainian scientists are working on the problems which include the world of elementary particles, controlled thermonuclear synthesis, newest types of power generators and others. They are doing research in using genetic engineering, developing thinking machines, studying cosmic matter, utilizing the resourses of the world ocean, etc.

The great forces are united under the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences set up in 1919. At its disposal there are many scientific centers, laboratories, experimental plants, production designing departments and computer centers. There are a lot of universities in Ukraine, the oldest one is the Lviv founded in 1662. Besides, there are hundreds of other higher educational establislunents, branch research institutes which have done much to promote the science of our country.

It was the Ukrainian scientists that split the nucleus of an atom, built the first accelerator of elementary particles, discovered heavy water, heavy isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen, founded the world-known schools of mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and physiology. Who does not know the achievements of Ukrainian scientists in the field of electric welding, cybernetics, industrial production of manmade diamonds? Who does not know the names of Ostrogragsky, Barabashov, Sinelnikov, Glushkov, Paton and many others?

Nowadays the efforts of the Ukrainian scientists are aimed at solving the most complicated problem of curing people who suffered as a result of the accident at Chernobyl atomic power station. They are working at the invention of medicines which would cure people from radioactive influence.

The Ukrainian scientists also study the history of Ukraine, its language and culture, the present-day problems of its economy.
