Light Intensity

In surgical sites, light is absorbed because tissues are dark and nonreflective. For this reason, it’s very important for surgical lights to provide intense light.

Light intensity is measured in units called lux. Surgical lights are 80,000 to 160,000 lux. But brighter is not better. Surgeons need intense light, but if it’s too intense, it could burn the patient, and, if the light is too intense, too blindingly white, it causes the surgeon’s eye fatigue and reflection off instruments. Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate on the quality of light, and not quantity of light.

‘MAQUET’ surgical lights use diverging and refractive technology, while some other surgical light manufacturers use converging and reflective technology.

Shadow reduction is achieved through the utilization of prisms.

The face of the surgical light is comprised of thousands of micro prisms that form many independent light sources. The beams from these light sources overlap across the operating field, so that the presence of the surgical team’s heads, shoulders and hands cause little interference to the lighting. The shadows created by the masked zones are then “diluted” by the beams of the lighted zones. Quality surgical light, without glare or shadowing, allows surgeons to best see and interpret tissues, vessels, etc., with the highest degree of accuracy.
