This shot was part of a swimwear shoot for a magazine. I like to use portable battery operated strobes for outdoor shots (like the Profoto 7B).

When trying to overpower direct sunlight you need to have a powerful strobe. Profoto’s 7B delivers up to 1200w, enough to create a shot like this. For more dramatic shots with dark skies (something I do quite often), you will need to bring a more powerful pack (which unfortunately is not available in a battery operated version) and a generator.

Honda makes a series of very portable and amazingly quiet generators that are perfect for projects like this. You may be able to rent them at local construction-equipment rental places.

In this shot the model’s light-meter reading was just about 1/2 stop above the overall ambient reading, which made for a nicely saturated sky. I used a “beauty dish” reflector on the strobe because I didn’t want our shadows to be too intense. Beauty dishes are large round reflectors that diffuse the light by bouncing it into a white disc (directly in front of the bulb), before reflecting it into the actual reflector. The result is a soft but characteristic light that’s perfect for - beauty!

Tip: Whenever you have direct sunlight hitting your lens like this, make sure your lens in extra-clean!
