6. День или два спустя миссис Стрикленд прислала молодому человеку записку с просьбой зайти к ней. Она была одна. Ее простое черное платье намекало на ее тяжелую утрату. Она старалась держать себя в руках, но юноша видел, как ее руки судорожно сжимаются и разжимаются.
7. Новость о том, что ее муж увлекся другой женщиной, была настоящим ударом для миссис Стрикленд. Она не могла поверить, что его решение непоколебимо, и надеялась, что он вернется в семью.
