The Museum of the History of the House: 19^th and 20^th Centuries

This building is regarded as a gem of Tyumen wooden architecture. It makes up a single ensemble combining Baroque and Classical elements with distinctive local three-dimensional carving. In 1996 this edifice became the home of an unusual museum – its exhibition introduces visitors to major turning-points in the history of Russia, to dramatic human destinies and memorable events. The old mansion originally belonged to the Ikonnikov merchant family (1804). On 31 May and 4 June 1837 Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolayevich, the heir to the Russian throne, stayed in this building. The owner of this house, Ivan Ikonnikov, the town’s chief executive, received the guest of honour. The boat built by Tyumen craftsmen for ferrying the Tsesarevich across the Tura to the Tobolsk road, became the property of Tyumen and was preserved in a specially erected and guarded structure. Its model, re-created according to documentary sources, is now on display in the museum. In August and September of 1919 the house was the headquarters of the Commander of the 51^st Rifle Division of the Red Army Vasily Blucher, the first holder of the order of the Red Banner. In 1935 he became one of the first five marshals of the Soviet Union, but was sentenced to death two years later. The memorial belongings associated with him are shown in a newly re-created study. The exhibition of this museum includes wax effigies – the first display of this kind in Siberia. The figures were made by experts of the historical museum of wax effigies in St. Petersburg.
