We live in the world of information. It is everywhere and sometimes it is even more valuable than money. Mass media, that is press, radio, television and the Internet, play an important role in our society. They inform, educate, entertain and give us any kinds of information.

The press is one of the most powerful kinds of mass media. Nowadays there are daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines. My family is subscribed to Komsomolskaya Pravda which

is one of the most famous daily newspapers. I read it every day to know what happens in the world. My mother buys women's magazines and my father reads sports magazines.

Television plays a big role in our family too. It gives a great opportunity to learn latest news. I prefer watching news and films on television. My mother likes soap operas, my father prefers sports programmes and political talk shows. My brother watches cartoons and educational programmes. I think that it is impossible to live without television now.

Radio is less popular than newspapers and television. People listen to the radio in cars and at work. I usually listen to the radio when I do my homework because it helps me think.

The Internet is the newest kind of mass media. More and more people use it in Belarus regularly. The Internet is the greatest source of information. Almost everything can be found there. I use the Internet very often. I chat with people online, read news, watch films, listen to music, play online games. I use the Internet to find important information for my studies, too. E-mail has become a good way of communication. You can send a letter to your friends from other countries without buying an envelope and it will be delivered in a few seconds.

School

School is a very special place. It’s a temple of knowledge, a place where you grow up and take courage, make friends and form your personality. You come here as a child of six and leave it as a grown-up person of 17. So school becomes your second home.

This year I am finishing school №5 in Svetlogorsk. The school is a 4-storeyed building of a typical design. It was built in 1969. Outside the school there is a big sports ground and a lot of beautiful flower-beds. On the sports ground pupils have their classes in physical training when the weather is fine.

On the first floor you can see a cloakroom, a canteen, a gym, workshops, a headmistress’s office and some classrooms for junior pupils. On the second floor there is a library, a large Assembly hall, some classrooms and laboratories. They are well-equipped and have all the devices for studying and making experiments. The teacher’s room is on the third floor. We have 2 computer classrooms in our school. All the classrooms are large and light.

Pupils study different subjects there: Russian, Belarusian, Literature, Maths, Physics, History, Chemistry, Geography, Biology, English, Computer Programming. They also have Music, Physical Education, Arts and Handicrafts. My favourite subject is English. I like to learn new words, to discuss something interesting.

We go to school 5 days a week and we usually have 5 or 6 lessons every day. Our classes start at 8 o´clock.

At school we have good teachers who treat us with respect. They help us to develop our critical and creative thinking, to form our views and characters, our attitudes to life and other people. They also teach us to love our Motherland, to be honest and hard-working.

I enjoyed my school years and I’II remember them for the rest of my life.
