Today we are going to build a map of Canada with a focus on the north and in particular, the Northwest Territories. Then we're going to ask you to write about your community in the Northwest Territories

Sachs Harbour

Sachs Harbour is the smallest Inuvialuit community in the Northwest Territories. I lived my first five years in Sachs Harbour. I have recently do ne a poster on Sachs Harbour in my Social Studies class. The topic was called "What's in a Name", the names of building, streets, lakes, rivers, and creeks, also, the names of the town.

The name Sachs comes from the ship ^‘Mary Sachs’ of the Canadian Arctic Expedition in 1913, The Inuviaiuktun name is 'Ikaahuk', which means crossing. The airport and the Co-op are also named Ikaahuk. The community hall is named TanikpakHall' after the late Susie Sydney, who was an elder of the community. The school is named ‘Inualuuyaq School’ after an Inuvialuk elder.

There are a few lakes, a few creeks, a hill, and a river that are named after people who have lived in Sachs Harbour. Here are some examples, there is: Kuptan Lake-named after William Kuptan, Fred Lake (Atdgaqliaq) -named after Fred Carpenter. Raddi Lake-named after Raddi Quiqsaq, and Rufus Lake- named after Rufus Tingmiak. The creeks: Alice Creek-named after Alice Cruben, and Apian Creek-named after Joe Apian, The only river named after a resident of Sachs Harbour is Lennie River, which is named after Lennie Inglangasuk. All of these people were or are well known elders of Sachs Harbour and only one of these elders is still alive today (Joe Apian). Unlike the lakes, etc....the streets do not have names because the community is very small and only has one main road.

Though I was very young when I lived in Sachs Harbour, I do have a lot of memories of living there. When I was about 4 years old, my father's cousin, gave and named a hill after me that was visible from town. He told me that he gave the hill to me and it is only mine. We named the hill Bambi's hill. I was and still am very proud that the hill is mine, even though it's not official.

In conclusion, Sachs Harbour is a very beautiful country, has a nice ocean view, and as you can tell, they respect their elders. There is one Bed & Breakfast, which is personally owned by a resident of Sachs Harbour. The Inuvialuit people are very willing for people of other cultures to experience our way of living, and the ways of hunting for food. I would suggest that if anyone had the chance to visit Sachs Harbour, they should.
