UF 03 PIDKAMIN ETHNIC FESTIVAL 14.07 – 26.07 Lviv reg, FEST, 8 vol

PROJECT: The village Pidkamin has got its name from the rock. Pidkamin means from Ukrainian “under the stone”. The first mention of the settlement at this territory dates back to 1441. In the vicinity of the settlement, close to the rock Stone, archaeologists found fragments of dishes which can be dated 11-6 century BC. The land in the village of Pidkamin and around it is full of piety. For example the rock Stone in pre-Christian times served as a kind of talisman to protect people from evil. With the adoption of Christianity, here was located the temple-fortress. Opposite the rock on a hill was located a Roman Catholic Dominican monastery. First monks appeared in Pidkamin in the 7th century, but in official historical sources there first mention about them dates back to1464. In this year started building of fortifications and was founded the church for Dominican monks. The monastery stood little less than a century. In 1519 during a Tatars attack the monastery was destroyed, than it was rebuilt and preserved till now in half ruined state. But now there are few monks in the monastery, who are working in order to renovate this holly place. In 2007 the first local festival took place – since than the idea of the folk festival is supporting every year. It brings lots of people from all over Ukraine, in the same way popularizing the village and it’s heritage

WORK: volunteers are welcome to help while preparing of the festival space - arranging of the territory, putting dust bags, helping while establishing of tent city etc), kipping an order while the festival (clean territory, informational boards etc) and tiding of the festival field after the festival days. There will be as well team of Ukrainian volunteers, who will support the successful running of the festival

ACCOMMODATION: to be confirmed: boarding school/monastery cells - sleeping bags are needed.

LOCATION: Pidkamin is a village located in Brody district, Lviv region. It has a population of about 2,500 and is located around 23 km far from Brody (nearest train station) There is bus connection between Pidkamin and Brody, Pidkamin and Ternopil, Pidkamin and Lviv.

WHAT TO BRING: Please do not forget working clothe, comfortable shoes, sleeping bags, rain-coats. You can bring some games with you, traditional food and clothe is welcome as an essential part of the intercultural evening.

TERMINAL: Lviv, UKRAINE. Lviv airport (International code LWO). There is good connection by train/bus from Krakow/Wroclaw/Warsaw/Kiev and many other European cities. Detailed information and maps will come with info sheet not later then 4 weeks before start date.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Camp language is English. Volunteers will have chance to get to know lots of interesting facts about Ukrainian folk culture, participate in workshops. Sightseeing, excursion, week-end trips are planned as a part of the camp.
