UF 01 MAKE IT BY YOURSELF 14.07-27.07 Lviv region ENVI/RENO, 8 vol

PROJECT: Vovkiv was founded in 1398. Now it is a beautiful village, but many years ago it was a town and its name was translated as wolf‘s town. There are many unique old buildings: village houses, wooden churches (XVII and XVIII c), school (XIX c), ruins of palace, other. Nowadays Vovkiv is a centre of Ukrainian ethnic culture and traditions. In last years green tourism is popular trend in that area.

One of famous places in Vovkiv is the house where the outstanding artist Nicholas Ustyanovych lived. Since 1991 the house was transformed into memorial museum. The museum - 1 hectare of old garden with fruit trees, herbs and flowers - creates a cozy atmosphere here. Well in the museum courtyard is the deepest in the whole village. On the territory of the museum there is ethnographic exposition - folk clothes, tools, spinning-wheel, spindle, lamps, dishes,etc. Svitlycia - part of the old barn - there is room for exhibitions, creative meetings and conferences. The special atmosphere of the museum creates a old style kitchen with fireplace - where you can drink tea or milk, or bake an apple from a local garden. Volunteers will live and work here. WORK: The work will include museum territory arranging and tidying up, making main path of museum, renovating old well and gates, improving public recreation area near the small lake. Besides volunteers have a chance to participate in 1-2 folk art workshops where they can learn some Ukrainian folk art techniques – for example it is planned to built a new fireplace (see the picture) according to the ethnical rules.

ACCOMMODATION: basic, in the museum buildings. Washing facilities outside, summer house type (garden shower). Village type toilet (outside). Sleeping bag required.

LOCATION: village Vovkiv, 25 km from Lviv, Western Ukraine. Lviv is an ancient city of Lions, “capital” of Western Ukraine (60 km from EU-Poland boarder), one of three “worth of seeing” cities in Ukraine according to world travel guides.

TERMINAL: Lviv, UKRAINE. Lviv airport (International code LWO). There is good connection by train/bus from Krakow/Wroclaw/Warsaw/Kiev and many other European cities. Detailed information and maps will come with info sheet not later then 4 weeks before start date.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Camp language is English. Russian or Ukrainian will be very helpful in communication with locals. Sightseeing, excursion to Lviv and week-end trips are planned as a part of the camp. Even if living conditions will be simple we hope that charming countryside and atmosphere of ethnical Ukrainian culture will compensate this small inconveniences.
