Moral values as they are seen today

Of course no one is perfect in this world and it is self-evident that each generation is worse than the last. Unfortunately today we can observe changes of the moral values. Moral standards of honesty, purity, love for others disappeared. Instead of them we face individualism, greed, lust, hypocrisy, me first philosophy, sexual freedom. And as the result of these changes in the way of thinking and behaving we come across breakdowns in the family, drug and alcohol abuse, increasing violence and civil disorder. Essential parts of our society nowadays are money, sex, drugs, crime, religion and politics. We have created a society which can produce murder of children, rape and child abuse, violence in the family. Taken together they form a swelling tide of anger, bewilderment and despair.

I don’t want to say that this decline in moral values takes place only in the modern society. No doubts that these problems have existed before, but nowadays they took a very dangerous rise. And it’s hard to say what are the reasons of it. It was growing step by step. It was sexual revolution in 1960s; the victory of the individualism over collectivism worldwide; it was increasing violence and sex on TV; then came “me first” philosophy which justifies all actions in terms of self-interest, rather than the common good. The old authorities – parents, school, church, government – have declined in influence. No one else has the right to decide by which values I run my life.

It’s necessary to change “me first” philosophy and put other people’s needs at the 1st place just to make the world better and do not blame each other. The simple way out from this situation is to start with ourselves. If each person began with what they could do to put things right and to set new standards, then we might soon see a difference.

Everybody knows the Biblical principle: “Be kind with people if you want them be kind with you”. When you help others you improve yourselves.

The challenges and rewards of voluntary work

Unfortunately today we can observe changes of the moral values. But still there are some people who are ready despite all difficulties to try to make this world better and to help people who are in need. They are volunteers.Voluntary work is a priceless asset to any society. It is any activity which involves spending time, unpaid, doing something which aims to help people, good causes, or to improve the environment without any reward.

Volunteering is a great way to use your skills to help others, and at the same time learn something new which may lead to a qualification. As a volunteer you may get the chance to develop new skills. There are all sorts of reasons to volunteer, including: helping others, meeting new people, taking part in something which is important to you, gaining experience and improving your job prospects.

The benefit of being a volunteer is a sense of personal satisfaction from giving your time to help others. Volunteering is a way to improve your career prospects and put something back into society.

Nowadays a lot of volunteering organizations exist. And their activities range from rattling collection boxes in the streets to sitting as a Justice of Peace.

Many volunteers advise adults on issues such as holding and employment; and help young people prepare CVs and application forms and advise them on interview techniques etc. Volunteers visit housebound people as well And the only reward they got is the feeling that they’re bringing a little bit happiness into someone’s life.

Many companies encourage volunteering through release time schemes, and most special offices that promote and organize volunteering.

So, I will dare to say that volunteerism is an innovative paradigm for 21st century corporate citizenship, in the world where volunteerism exists; the city begins to look human. So volunteerism is a matter of Moral Re-armament.

The status and role of women in modern society

Women always had to struggle for their rights. Since ancient times there was a thought that woman had to devote all her time to her family, that she is not created for mental work, that she must only learn how to keep the house.

Unfortunately we must admit the fact that even nowadays since childhood young girls are taught they should be passive and dependent creatures. Some girls think that they have only four occupations open for them – nurse, secretary, teacher, or mother. The only duties they have is to wash, cook and clean.

Unfortunately girls are being brainwashed into accepting that men and women have very different roles to play in society. Because of these prejudices for a woman that is bright enough, ambitious enough, has a good idea and wants to make it work, still it will be very hard for her to find a job because in the working world women come a distant second to men.

According to the International Organization lower wages for women are common in most countries.

No doubt, that women have the same nature abilities for mental development as men have. But some time ago because of some prejudices men thought that it was impossible for a woman to become an equally educated specialist. And all doors were closed for women, esp. in the field of science. But after a long struggle, women achieved their goals and now they can get any job they want. And men rate women highly and they are even proud to work with women who are qualified specialists and caring mothers.

I don’t want to complain too much, because if earlier this problem wasn’t even spoken about, now it has become a burning issue all over the world.
