THE SAILING SHIP "KHERSONES" Welcome on board the “Khersones” Let me - show you round the ship this way please. This ship - wasbuilt in 1989 at Gdansk shipyard in Poland. Ship-owner is Kerch Marine Technological institute. The students of Navigation, Electrical and engineer Departments have their practice on board the sailing training ship “Khersones”. The ship was named after ancient town in the Crimea, near Sevastopol. Students are taught to all kinds of sailors job: to handle sails, to carry out meteorological observations, to steer the ship, to keep watches, to scrab and wash the deck, to help at galley and have lessons as well. The technical data of the ship are as follows: her overall length is 109m including the bowsprit, breadth is 14m, draught 6,6m deadweght is 3000 tons. You can see three masts: the fore-mast, main mast and mizzen mast. The height of the fore and main mast is 49,5m the mizzen mast is 3 metres less. The ship has fore-and-aft sails and square sails - 24 sails in all. Each sail has its own name. The total area of sails is 3000 square metres. The ship has three decks: the upper deck, the main deck and the tween deck. On the upper deck there are two superstructures: the fore superstructure and the aft one. The navigating bridge, the chart room, master's cabin are situated in the aft superstructure. The training chart-room for cadets, the sick-bay are in the fore superstructure. On the main deck which is beneath the upper deck you can find officers cabins, bunk-room for cadets, dining-room, mess-room for crew and classroom. The tween deck is the lowest deck on the ship where cabins and different service rooms are situated. The ship is equipped with all life saving appliances except the sails the ship is powered by two auxiliary engines of 570 horse power each. The crew of the ship is 55 persons including teachers and can take 150 cadets. Now on board the ship there are students and cadets frommarine schools. Thank you very much. Our excursion is over.
