  11. Travelling. What do people expect to see and learn when they go travelling?

There are various means of travel. We can travel by train, boat, airplane, car and finally we can travel on foot. Should you ask me what kind of transport I like best I`d speak in support of the train. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. What place is more interesting than a big station? There is the movement, the excitement, the gaiety of the people going away and sorrow of those who are seeing others off. There are the shouts of the porters as they pull luggage along the platforms to the waiting trains, the crowd at the booking-office getting tickets, the children tightly holding on to the skirts of their mothers, and passengers hurrying to board the train. I like to travel by train.

In the Restaurant

In the restaurant, as well as in the kitchen, there are also different kinds of jobs.

The meals are served by waiters and waitresses. In less formal restaurants, the waiters and waitresses take orders and serve the meals. Most restaurants also employ busboys, who pour water, clear and set tables. In some restaurants, however, the waiters and waitresses carry out these tasks. Finally, there are cashiers who receive payment or signed bills from the guests. When the guest puts his restaurant bill on his hotel account, this information must be passed along to the accounting office as quickly as possible.

Touring by car in Britain

With its good road and motorway network, Britain is ideally suited for driving tours. Road numbers and destinations are clearly signposted and even smaller country roads are well surfaced. For quick point-to-point travel the motorway system is best, but to discover the real Britain get off the main roads and explore quiet rural lanes and hidden-away villages. When travelling around, look out for the white-on-brown signposts which indicate nearby tourist attractions. Renting a car means that you are free to go where you choose and visit places off the beaten track.

My family

When two persons are married, the man is called the husband; the woman becomes his wife. When a child is born in the family, the father and mother of the child are called parents. A family generally consists of a father, a mother and children- sons or daughters or both. The first born child is the eldest, the last born-the youngest. Two children that are born together are called twins. The father and mother of the husband become the father-in-low and mother-in-low of the wife. The other members of the family are the relatives or relations: uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.

The brothers and sisters of any of the parents become the uncles and aunts of the children.

Kazakh customs and traditions

Nauryz, the modern Kazakh word for New Year. The tradition of reconciliation between relatives around a festive table, exchange of presents and good wishes is set for this day. The ritual dish of this festival is nauryz - kozheh. Nauryz - kozheh always includes seven ingredients, signifying the seven life beginnings — water, meat, salt, fat, flour, cereal (rice, corn, wheat) and milk. They symbolize joy, luck, wisdom, health, wealth, speed growth and Heavenly protection. If milk symbolizes the New Year, the old year is symbolized by meat, particularly smoked meat from the reserves of the past year. Today Kazakhs today meet Nauryz in the streets, squares, parks and stadiums. Thousands of people witness sharp verbal competitions of akyns, contest in national sports — kazakhsha - kyres, toguz, kumalak, horse competitions like Kyz - Kuu, Baiga. Various dramatized shows and theatrical marches, presenting national customs and rituals attract people and teach them to respect national culture and native land, promote repproachement and mutual understanding of different nations.

Drama, music, ballet in Great Britain

The center of theatrical activity in Britain is London. There are about 50 principal theatres in professional use in or near the West End and some 20 in the suburbs. The National Theatre stages classical and modern plays in its complex of 3 theatres on the south bank of the river Thames. The former Old Vic Company, which was Britain's major theatrical touring company, has now taken up residence in the National Theatre changing its name to the National Theatre Company. In addition the Royal Shakespeare Company presents Shakespearean plays at Stradford - upon - Avon and a mixed repertoire in London. Outside London there are many nonrepertory theatres which present all kinds of drama and also put on variety shows and other entertainments. There are some reportory companies which receive financial support from the Arts Council and the local authorities. Some companies have their own Theatres, while others rent from the local authorities. Music of all kinds — pop music, jazz, light music and brass bands — is an important part of British cultural life. The large audiences at orchestral concerts and at performances of opera, ballet and chamber music reflect the widespread interest in classical music. The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London gives regular seasons of opera and ballet. It has its own orchestra, which plays for the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet. The English National Opera which performs in London and also tours the provinces.
