We know different methods for data collection: observation, questionnaire, and interview or demo lesson. For my data collection, I used compare method for questionnaire.

I used observation at the lessons and questionnaire from teachers, local and Turkish students for data collection. In Turkish class and Two Foreign Languages I gave same questionnaire for students; I was sitting at the lesson only two times because I had experience from first course and I gave my questionnaire for English teachers.

Observation:

I decided to observe only for Turkish group, because I had experience from First year at Suleyman Demirel University. In my group were six foreign students from Turkey and 19 students of Kazakhstan. But, when I was researching my work I decided to choose only one Turkish group from language school because I wanted to see what have been changed in their action (thoughts or understanding). I noticed that the Turkish group which was observed for my research, they were more active and attentive at the lessons. They tried to express their emotions, opinions in English language. But, their teacher said: at the first time they were not active at the lessons. In my hypothesis may be: there were not girls and boys were not closed at the lessons (boys felt comfortable and easy at the lesson). Other hypothesis may be: administration didn’t mix Turkish Students from Turkey with our Local Students (and if administration did mix, Turkish students could feel barrier or anxiety at the lessons).

Teacher didn’t use any words in a target language, Turkish students understood that they should adapt to listening everything in foreign language. I saw that to Turkish students are very difficult to write essay, they liked to speak in English language, it was easy for them. Also, teacher used three methods for teaching Turkish Students:

- Direct method

- Audio – Lingual method

- Total Physical Response

Questionnaire

I want to write opinions of English teachers at Suleyman Demirel University:

1. Mahmud Shakhrizada

- Group which you have classes with? Turkish or Kazakh;

- What are differences between Turkish and Local Students in ELL?

Turkish and local students are totally different. It’s difficult to teach for Turkish students than local students.

- What’re difficulties between Turkish and local students in English Language Learning…

o Problems with pronunciation? Why?

There are a lot of problems in pronunciation of Turkish students because it’s more difficult for them to learn English.

o What kind of sounds/words:

Almost every single word is hard to pronounce for them.

- Problem with grammar? What types of problems?

Grammar is less problematic than pronunciation

- Fluency of speech? Fluency of speech is not so good.

- Problems that you didn’t find in the list: ______________.

2. Shynar Baigozha

- Group which you have classes with? Turkish or Kazakh;

- What are differences between Turkish and Local Students in ELL?

Absolutely everything is almost different, what is same is that they are both students. Different behavior, culture, traditions, way of speaking, giving and receiving the information. The way they dress, talk to each other and etc.

- What’re difficulties between Turkish and local students in English Language Learning…

First difficulty was motivating them to learn English at all.

o Problems with pronunciation? Why?

May be because they have only one mother language from their birth they hear only one language, however local students hear several languages, and it is easier for them to adopt.

o What kind of sounds/words:

mostly consonants “TH”, or when two consonants come together like “SQ” – square, “W” – would – (V), different between G – J and some diphthongs.

- Problem with grammar? What types of problems?

Problems in:

o Understanding 3rd person (He, She, It – to be)

o Understanding perfect tenses

o Seeing differences between noun/adjectives/adverbs.

o Sentence structure simple structure

o Question structure

I guess that is all for elementary level students.

- Fluency of speech?

Depends on student, some really had good fluency (I mean they were not shy to speak out, to make mistakes, even if they just told words not sentence.

- Problems that you didn’t find in the list:

o Writing and reading;

o Cultural problems (in playing some games in showing some video clips);

o Home task assignments;

o T – S, S – S relationships;

o Classroom management;

o Group work/ pair work activities.

3. Shynar Baigozha

Kazakh students don’t show their emotions as expressively Turkish students. They are more timed whereas Turkish students are very easy – going, careless and with no hang – ups at all.

- What’re difficulties between Turkish and local students in English Language Learning…

o Problems with pronunciation? Why?

They tend to have more Russian like pronunciation especially with consonants “R”

o What kind of sounds/words: __________.

- Problem with grammar? What types of problems?

I’d also say perfect tenses, unreal conditionals, sometimes reported speech.

- Fluency of speech?

Again I would say it depends on students rather than nation. Students background (KTL/not), personality (shy/talkative) and etc.

- Problems that you didn’t find in the list:

- Classroom management

- Writing and reading
