Cultural identity is different in any country. Religion, tradition, cultural, ethics and behavior play big role in learning languages. I will give some examples:

Turkish cultural doesn’t have close friendship between boys and girls. When Turkish girls came to our university, they had cultural shock when they saw that close friendship between girls and boys normally in Kazakhstan. And Turkish students had big barrier in communication with local students, as well as Turkish girls didn’t communicate with Turkish boys and vice versa.

I found that foreign students have culture shock in 3 aspects, namely:

· women-men relationships;

· different ways of thinking;

· different habits.

I want to show various symptoms that can occur in relation to Culture Shock between physical, cognitive and behavioral factors:

Type of culture shock Symptoms
physical 1. digestion problems 2. loss of appetite 3. sleep disorder 4. high blood pressure
cognitive 1. feeling of isolation / home sickness 2. accusing the host culture for own distress 3. self-pity 4. anger and mistrust towards members of the host society 5. worries about own state health 6. permanent strain and distress 7. concern to be cheated or mislead 8. eruptions of rage about minor occurrences 9. decrease in self-confidence due to experienced inability to cope in the host culture 10. lack of assertiveness because of the validity of one′s own cultural norms and values 11. helplessness and depression over everyday life problems that seem to be unsolvable
behavioral 1. performance deficits 2. separation from host nationals 3. increased contact to fellow nationals 4. higher alcohol consumption 5. refusal of learning or speaking the host language 6. insulting statements about the host society and its members

“Local students’ attitudes were also another difficulty that foreign students had to adjust. Foreign students wanted to listen attentively on that lecture but they were distracted by the noises made by some local students.” (Dwi Poedjiastutie University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Indonesia, p.16)

“If you plan to study at a foreign university, college or school, you'll need a good knowledge of the local language, unless the course you want to study is taught through the medium of your L1. Your institution will probably provide preparatory courses to improve your language skills and continuing support throughout your main course.” (Why Should I study English http://www.omniglot.com/language/why.htm)

When you arrived in new country, you should learn everything: their habits, behaviors, culture, tradition, language and etc. You must be ready for everything, yes when Turkish students came to our university they was shocked. Because, they saw new country with new people; they saw how Kazakh students different from Turkish students; they tried to show his respect to our students and vice versa. Students of Suleyman Demirel University was shocked when they knew that Turkish students know only Turkish language, our students knew two and more languages; knowledge Turkish students was lower than students of Suleyman Demirel University. Turkish students were interested in cultures and traditions, they tried to speak with local students in English language; local students wanted to improve their turkey language and they tried to communicate with Turkish students in Turkish language.
