Arson Prevention

According to NFPA records, more than half of the reported fires in educational facilities from 1980-1996 were "incendiary or suspicious" in nature. This percentage is even higher for secondary schools.

There are, however, many steps schools can take to increase protection from arson.

First, a building's security measures (i.e., preventing unauthorized people from entering or loitering near the building) should be included in the school's overall arson prevention plan. Keeping doors locked after hours and regularly inspecting mechanical or electronic locking devices for proper operation are also important. However, these locking devices must not prevent exit from the building.

In addition, areas around the building susceptible to the accumulation of waste or clutter should be well lighted and should receive close, regular attention. Minimizing the accumulation of waste paper, boxes, dirty rags, or other waste inside the building should also be a fire prevention goal. While these items may naturally accumulate during the school day, it's important to have collection containers located throughout the building and have them emptied at regular intervals. Furthermore, storage rooms containing combustible items such as paper, cloth, or cleaning solvents, should also be kept clean.

FOR PARENTS AND BABY-SITTERS

PARENTS BABY-SITTERS
1. Never leave children alone if they are not capable of taking care of themselves. 2. Know your baby-sitter- choose a person who has a sense of responsibility, a liking for children, and, if possible, who lives in the same neighbourhood. 3. Review these guidelines with your babysitter. 4. Leave both written and oral instructions with your baby-sitter, including: - where you will be, how you can be contacted (exact address, phone number) and when you will return; - the name, address and phone number of a responsible neighbour to be contacted in an emergency; - the complete address of your residence; - where the exits are located; - where the phone is located; - how to call the fire department, police, or a doctor in an emergency; 5. Provide your baby-sitter with a flashlight in case there is a power failure. IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE YOUR FIRST RESPONSIBILITY IS THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN If you smell smoke or gas, take the children immediately to a safe location outside the building. Never waste time dressing the children—a –blanket will do, even in cold weather. Do not turn on any switches as this may cause a spark and an explosion. NEVER go back into a burning building for any reason whatsoever smoke and gas are dangerous, even from a very small fire Have a neighbour call the Fire Department. REMEMBER - TAKE THE CHILDREN TO A SAFE LOCATION OUTSIDE THE BUILDING

Survive a Fire in Your Home... Plan Your Escape Today!

Anyone who has lived through a fire will tell you what a terrifying experience it is. Unfortunately, many people who experience fire never get a chance to tell their story - to warn others of the dangers of fire.

Your fire department wants you to be prepared if a fire strikes your home. Please take a few minutes with your family to make a fire escape plan by following the nine simple instructions listed below. Every household must have a fire escape plan and a working smoke alarm to help ensure survival in a fire. Begin your plan by checking your smoke alarm to make sure that it is working. The smoke alarm will wake you up if a fire occurs while you are asleep.
