You should know it….

Auto insurance

Auto insurance is not yet compulsory in Ukraine, and you will not be checked for insurance at the border. Even if you were, foreign insurance companies would almost certainly refuse to insure your car in a "dangerous" place like Ukraine.

You may buy 3rd party car insurance in Ukraine for as little as 130 UAH for 6 months ($26 USD). This will cover up to $5000 in damages to the other car in accidents where you are at fault. Fully comprehensive auto insurance policies might also be available for foreigners.

Car accidents

When car accidents occur in Ukraine, drivers are required to leave their cars on the scene of the accident until traffic police come and write up a report. This rule creates significant traffic problems in large cities. When drivers don't want to involve police and insurance companies, they agree on a cash settlement on the stop. One party will usually call a family member or friend and have them bring the agreed amount of cash to the accident site.

2. Do you drive a car? When did you learn to drive? What make of car do you drive?

3. What skills do you need to practise to pass the driving test in your country? Did you pass your test first time? What do you find most difficult about driving?

4. Which is your favourite kind of public transport -

5. How do you usually travel to work or college in your country?

RIGHT-HAND AND LEFT-HAND TRAFFIC

Ex. 1 Read the text and translate into Ukrainian. / Прочитайте та перекладіть текст на українську мову:

Right-hand traffic and left-hand traffic mean regulations requiring all traffic to keep either to the left or the right side of the road. This is so fundamental to transport that it is sometimes referred to as the rule of the road. The purpose of this basic rule is to facilitate traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions. Though originally most traffic drove on the left worldwide, today right-hand traffic prevails. About 34% of the world's people live in left-traffic countries and 66% in right-traffic countries; roughly 28% of the world's total road distance carries traffic on the left, and 72% on the right.

Right-hand traffic

ü Oncoming traffic is seen coming from the left.

ü Left-turning traffic must cross oncoming traffic.

ü Most traffic signs facing motorists are on the right-hand side of the road.

ü Overtaking other vehicles is done by driving on the left.

ü Traffic on roundabouts (traffic circles or rotaries) goes anticlockwise (counter-clockwise).

ü Pedestrians crossing a two-way road should first look for traffic from their left.

ü Most vehicles have a left-hand driver's position, instruments and controls.

Left-hand traffic

ü Oncoming traffic is seen coming on the right.

ü Right-turning traffic must cross oncoming traffic.

ü Most traffic signs facing motorists are on the left-hand side of the road.

ü Overtaking other vehicles is done by driving on the right.

ü Traffic on roundabouts (traffic circles or rotaries) goes clockwise.

Pedestrians crossing a two-way road should first look for traffic from their right.

Most vehicles have a right-hand driver's position, instruments and controls.
