Grass - drying

Grass-drying is not a new process. It was introduced into the U.K. in the 1930's and by 1950 over a thousand driers were in use. But this was a time of shortage of feedstuffs, and when feed rationing ended, in 1952 many of these driers ceased operating. Their production costs were too high and the value of the dried product was too low. High costs were the result of small scale and low efficiency of operation. The product was of low value because the grass was mature and indigestible. A few driers remained in operation. They were the large units, linked with skilled field management to provide crops of high quality for drying over a long season.

There is different equipment for drying grass. They are: driers, high - temperature driers, medium - temperature driers. The drier is the most expensive single item of equipment, and success will depend very much on its operational efficiency. A big advantage of using high -temperature driers is that this one is much more smaller than a low - temperature drier of similar evaporative capacity. The medium temperature continuous - flow drier has an inlet temperature of about 150°C. It carries grass on a conveyor through which the heated air is blown. Residence time will vary from 20 minutes to nearly an hour depending on the drier design - and the moisture content of the crop.
