Most information is available from manufacturers on the different types of drying and processing equipment, and on the harvesting and transport machines. But if the phases of the operation are not matched in a well balanced system output and profitability can fall below expected levels. A brief account of some of the factors limiting throughput may help in this respect.
The skilled operator aims to produce a certain number of tons of dried product from a given acreage over the season. First he must plan his cropping programme to ensure a steady supply to the drier. Then he must harvest and transport the crop at the rate the drier can deal with it. He must control the rate of throughput of the drier by attention to details such as the relationship between crop type, feed rate, exhaust temperature, and final moisture content of the dried product. The last is the most important.
The final moisture content of the died product, which can be controlled by the skilled operator, can also affect output.
Grass drying is a conservation system of high capital and high running costs. To be profitable it must be operated with great efficiency.
