The aim must then be to store the crop with as little loss or wastage as possible by one of the method described here: quick field hay, barn-dried hay, sealed bunker, tower silage and in a few cases, as dried grass. Before winter feeding begins an estimate is then made of the approximate amounts of the different qualities of conserved feeds available, and a feeding plan worked out to decide how these will be fed to the different classes of stock. This plan must include the other foods available on the farm (straw, sugar-beet tops, kale and roots, and home-grown cereals), and will also considered, which bought - in supplements will represent best value and whether home - mixing will cheapen the cost of any compounds needed.

The following sections are concerned with some aspects of drawing these plants. In these two main alternative situations are considered - that only cereals and conventional compounds are available; and that, in addition, dehydrated forages are also available. The latter will only be generally applicable if there is a considered increase in the production of dried grass. But this will only come about if there is a clear demand of this product from enough livestock farmers.
