CHAPTER 5. EXHAUST UNIT

5.1. PURPOSE AND DESIGN

Exhaust unit (fig. 5.1, also see suppl. fig. 5.2) is used to expel gases into atmosphere after operation.

It consists of diffuser, an exhaust pipe and a clamping strip (two parts of it are used for attachment of the helicopter exhaust pipe).

The diffuser is formed by the outer casing, the casing of the IV and V supports and four hollow struts.

There are following elements on the outer casing: a flexible shaft drive (РЧВ-НВ) (it is located in the upper part); an ejector (left upper part); pipe unions: for pressurization of the IV and V supports from the V stage (left and below), a pipe union for air bleed from the II support (2 pipes in the lower part), a pipe for oil supply (right and below), a pipe for oil scavenge (in the lower part), a pipe for breathing of the drive box and oil tank (right and on top), free turbine transmitter socket.

There is a bevel fairing inside the exhaust.

Depending on helicopter’s type, on which engine is installed, exhaust duct may be installed at 65° with engine’s axis, may be directed to the left or to the right side or pointed 75° or 105° up relatively horizontal plane or vertically down.

5.2. PROBABLE TROUBLES

Cracks of the exhaust pipe appear because of vibration and high temperature. If engine is in service, it’s possible to stop crack’s development by spotdrilling.
